Not sure if that clearance is bad or if your pistons or cylinders are to blame but yeah you can use sohc pistons they just would result in different compression in a dohc. KA blocks are so readily available I would just keep trying on like fb marketplace and if no luck overbore your block and get ne...

I agree with what one of the other posters mentioned..taking reasonable steps towards that goal. It sounds like you're already doing this too with step one being getting the car up and running. Good luck, definitely looking forward to seeing the progress.

You'll need to figure out your PCV. The way it is setup stock would result in you pressurizing the block. If you have any vacuum leaks under the manifold those need to be fixed, and by the way it's a great time to clean up/reduce the amount of vacuum plugs or excess hoses while you're in there.
