Drawing the line between basic and advanced machine work?
Hi Folks, I'm sure some/most of you have seen TurboMagazine's articles on the details of a some KA machine work. It's a great read because while I knew generally what went into machining, this address issues specific to the KA. Here's one of the links, pt3: http://www.turbomagazine.com/tech/turp_080...

Everything is 'weld steel' as Home Depot calls it, and even though it's new stock, I wire-wheel the weld areas to a nice shine. I also seem to have to use a little higher power, because before I could get away with the lowest setting for 22WAG, but now it won't even penetrate until I bump it up to m...

wow - I didn't notice the discussion go south. Anyways, so I'm told by my Dad that the tank is indeed filled, but I'm not sure if I'm getting propper flow. I changed wire/tip (down to 0.030 now), and when I turn the valve on the tank, I can hear a slight hissing at the tank, but I can't feel any pre...

I know, solder was a bad analogy: it's the idea of manually adding a metal to an already superheated material that I was getting at. With the wirefeed units it's up to how the controls are setup, which I think throws a lot of beginners off. I'll keep at it until the tank gets filled. Thanks for the ...

So I took a second look: my bad. I thought it was the contact tip that had to be perforated, but it's the nozzle that matters. There's also a legend on the welder that says green-banded shrowds signify MIG, and yellow is for flux-core. :dunno: There's no pipe adaptor, just a hose barb on the back. I...

Thanks for the response: I can get good penetration and consistency on flat sheetmetal, but what good is that? :D I have a feeling that this welder isn't truely setup for gas yet, because all of the tips I have gotten are only for flux-core (no holes for gas to pass through). What is the difference ...

Suggestions for geting better flux-core welds?
Hi folks, I have a MIG welder on loan for a while, and I'm just trying to get some good solid practice. I don't recall the brand or ratings, but I can tell you that it's not a Miller or any other main-name brand (likely a harbor-freight special). IIRC, it can do 90-100A or so, 20A /120Vac input. The...

For reference, here are the extras. Taken from 89-94 USDM 240sx FSM. No guarantees on accuracy. Also note that the ECU connector shown on the above website is pictured from the harness side, or looking into the ECU. !EN is active LOW output: when this pin is low(ground) the device will then enable/t...

Here's a pic of the stuff my Brother hooked me up with. According to Honda it's only for '99+ engines with aluminum oil pans. However Ron said they use it on anything and everything and is very adhesive. larger pic link http://lh4.google.com/image/slip0n0fall/RZM0bnZqjnI/AAAAAAAAAAo/fOcrurLs_7M/s288...

'Sounds like good advice, thanks. Trying to get that round bead to stay nice and uniform when reattaching the pan is almost impossible: probably why mine leaks. Now do you do the same thing for the front cover? Smooth it out and apply to both surfaces? Also do you wipe the excess that is squeezed ou...

Technically there are no lifters on the DE engine: it's a cam over bucket design. The cam lobes ride directly on buckets, with shims (only one on each) on top to adjust the lash. When you have head work done on these engines, it is absolutely imperative that the machinist knows what he/she is doing....

Best RTV/sealant for oil-prone applications.
Hi Folks, On my engine build about two years ago I used high temp Permatex red RTV all over: timing covers, valve cover, oil pan, etc. About a year in I noticed my oil pan was cracked so I replaced it and resealed it. Well now it's leaking again. It also appears that all of my RTV that was squeezed ...

Yeah that's what I would reccomend, especially if you're just starting your turbo project: you'll be happy you did later when you have to add more electronics. You can find 6-8-10 position fuse blocks for dirt cheap on ebay (just search for ATC fuse block). It's unlikely anything automotive related ...

Yeah whatever you do, *don't* increase the stock fuse values in the panels. The absolute correct way to do it is to run a dedicated 12AWG wire or so from the battery, and install an auxillary fuse block. You can use a relay to turn on this 12V source for accessory, run, etc. Obviously that's a bit o...

Oiled bearings really don't require a whole lot of pressure: anything above 25psi will suit most. 60psi is definately too high: you won't know it's been too much untill it's too late and your blowing oil past the seals(and into the intake, or out the exhaust). Anyways, when you install that restrict...

I suggest staying away from aftermarket 'stock' internals, especially the valve train. I bought a complete timing kit about a year or so ago and have already replaced the chain tensioner. No association with these folks, but they have great prices on OEM parts: www.midwaypartsteam.com.

So let me get this straight: are you guys actually using the Nismo FPR on your stock DE rail? I heard that the adjustment screw interfered with the valve cover. But heck, if it works for you guys it'll work for me. Fitment was the only reason I didn't consider it, but it's not like it will need to b...

You guys/gals seem to have the most experiance with this kit, so a post here doesn't seem too out of place. I purchased this kit around Feb. of last ye...
