If you are boosted, as I assume you are and you want longevity you may want to search and see if you can find anyone that is producing "Viton" valve stem seals for the KA. You would want them on the exhaust side to help to deal with the added heat that the turbo puts into the exhaust side ...

Be aware that if you use too much moly lube you will hydraulic lock the stud in the threaded hole before it bottoms out. One way to check to see if you have this condition is to take a straight edge and sit it across the tops of the studs and see if they are all at the same height (or close to it). ...

The typical answer to reusing a head gasket is NO there is a crush seal around the cylinders and at the coolant passages that will not seal properly if you reuse the HG. If you are using a solid copper HG I would say reuse it cus they always leak some. anyway. If you BOOST it HELL no DO NOT reuse it.

Just to clarify...

Did the caps that you gave the machine shop go with the head that you gave them or are the caps off of another head?

I measured my 98 cams last night and indeed the last journal is smaller. The journals that have caps measured 1.100 and the last journal closest to the back of the motor measured 1.060. which was no cap on a 98. If you don't have any oil holes in the last journal you have cams from some later model ...

Here is another thought: if you have access to a good set of dial calipers; measure the diameters of the two cam shafts at the rear bearing surface you have and see if they are the same.

I could not get a good pic of my 98 s-14 cams. What I did notice is that there is no oiling holes on the last bearing surface of the cam shaft closest to the back of the head. The 98 head does not have the provisions for the last cap to be used. It looks to me like you have a mixed set of cams. One ...
