JWT 350Z 6-speed gearbox swap

Post by KoukiKAT »

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but it's another option for a burly tranny behind a KA. Sure, some of the 350Z and G35 transmissions need a little rework eventually because of the synchros, but they're pretty beefy otherwise from what I know. Fairly plentiful and not too expensive either. Who's gonna run one first?

That's what I'm talking about. I hate to bash, but it sucks when people keep things like that to themselves. I've burnt through about 10k, and a marriage to help find things that work, and don't work for this community.

Other than that, sweet find.

I blame my anger on the holidays.

It looks pretty long. You'd definitely have to rework the shifter setup to get it to come through the stock shifter location at all. Something similar to what Xcessive does with their kit would probably do it.

Hmm first adapter I've seen like that. I think it'll put the shifter back a lot. There is a local guy that makes the adapter for sr20, me and a few others asked for them too make a ka one. Ill find a link to their ad on zilvia. Then there is a guy on ebay who can make one too.

The kit that is local, you have to mill the bell housing a little, shorten the shifter bracket. Make a custom crossmember too.

the z33 transmission has a higher 6th gear than the ka's 5th, i believe you will actually be even higher in rpms driving on the freeway.. the z has a lower geared differential to account for that.

Max speed @ 7000rpms w/ 225-55-16 based tire

KA : w/ 4.08 : 240sx final drive
gear 1: 3.321 - 38mph
gear 2: 1.902 - 66 mph
gear 3: 1.308 - 99 mph
gear 4: 1.000 - 126 mph
gear 5: 0.759 - 167 mph

Z33: w / 4.08 240sx final drive
gear 1: 3.794:1 - 33mph
gear 2: 2.324:1 - 54 mph
gear 3: 1.624:1 - 78 mph
gear 4: 1.271:1 - 99 mph
gear 5: 1.000:0 - 126 mph
gear 6: 0.794:1 - 159 mph

the z33 trans looks like it would be very choppy trans.

ka trans
1st-2nd is a 28mph diff
2nd-3rd is a 33mph diff
3rd-4th is a 27mph diff
4th-5th is a 41mph diff

z33 trans
1st-2nd is a 21mph diff
2nd-3rd is a 24mph diff
3rd-4th is a 21mph diff
4th-5th is a 27mph diff
5th-6th is a 33mph diff

LOL. I just was playing with the numbers so I wanted to know how fast I can go in reverse. So when you watch movies and they show a car in reverse staying up to speed with a car driving normally, there is some validity in it.

J30 is 3.916 not 3.96.
Just though I'd point that out.

Manual S15's rock 3.692's so that would help with the Z33 cruising rpms.

No problem.

I thought about the Nismo 6spd and adpating it for the KA but right off the bat you can tell its not gonna be very cost effective. Would be very nice for a N/A KA with the short gears you'd get.

I believe you can also use the 350Z Manual FD which is a 3.538 and they use a R200V IIRC but I can't verify or say for sure because I've never done it my self nor seen it. I believe when you do the gear of 1-5th is very very similar to our Stock Transfer and Different but with the extended 6th. I could be wrong though its been awhile sincerity played with the Z33 transfer idea.

I have a Z33 transmission and a KA auto bellhousing and I've been designing my own adapter plate. It's not a simple line up the holes and drill like other adapter plates - there are bearing surfaces and oil galleries that need to be incorporated into the adapter plate. When I finish my design I'll make sure it works before I sell a few and then put up the 3D model of it.

Now I may be completely crazy, but everything I find for the Q45 in alldata (or nodata, whatever you want to call it) says 1997-2001 have a 3.692 rear and the 2003-2005 have a 3.133 rear end. Am I just missing one being LSD and the ones I am finding are not?? The 3.133 rear would have wicked cruse in 6th.

Also, side note. The 2005-2011 Xterra, Frontier, and Pathfinder all have the same trans model as the 350z: FS6R31A. BUT they have different gear ratios;
1- 4.368
2- 2.518
3- 1.743
4- 1.283
5- 1.0
6- 0.769
All of those ratios suck even worse than the 350z except 6th. So with it being the same housing could you swap the 6th gear from the Xterra to the 350? I may be crazy and be just trying to justify this swap to myself.. food for thought.

not 100% sure but J30 had two different diffs if I'm not mistaken. That could be why someone had different information. Like I said, not 100% sure though.
