The Perfect Turbo?

Post by kjones »

Hey all,

I know this really depends on a lot of things, but over the years experience and experimentation usually provides some interesting results. I'm curious to hear what you guys have determined is the best turbo with early spool, good power, reliability ect...

My car will ALWAYS be a street car - just a fun cruiser that I will probably drive very frequently on pump gas

Conservative setup - starting out on stock internals and upgrading later to forged internals.

I'm not adverse to spending money on the right parts, but always like to approach a project starting out conservative, but also having room to grow. You learn more this way and many times avoid spending money on parts multiple times trying to chase your goals. I don't think I'll ever need to go farther than 425 rwhp once I upgrade the bottom end...

I am kinda liking the GT35 T3 ball bearing turbo but would love to hear what you guys think...

Turbo selection is not my best skill set so - if you had your ultimate turbo given my parameters what would it be?

The motor will obviously have proper tuning and electronics ect

I personally would never go bigger than a GT3076r on any 4 cylinder. Too much lag for me. That turbo will do over 400whp pretty easily.

Man this is just what I was looking for! Some real world advise on this! THANKS!

How are the spool characteristics of the GT3076r if you upgrade the cams?

Once we find the perfect turbo, then I'd like to hear comments on the cams as well...

Much appreciated!

GT3076R with either a .63ar undivided or .78ar divided housing/manifold.

Journal bearing choice would be a T3/T04E 50trim with .63ar undivided housing.

The guys at full race were telling me the 7064 was compared to the 3076 but spooled up a few hundred rpm faster and has better top end.

^ Holy smokes, isn't the 7064 a monster turbo?!

I have a T2/.86ar 3076R and I love the spool and power it makes. Easily makes over 400whp when it wants to. But as of right now, it's the biggest I've personally used.

If you're hell bent on a ball bearing turbo, 3076R is the cats ass.
If you will go with a journal bearing, the T3/T04E 50/57 trim in a .63ar housing has been proven time and time again for lag/spool/power.

My 1/50th of a buck...

No its not big at all. Got to full races web site. They have the scoop on the efr series turbos. But they do come with a price tag. They have a boost solonid attached to the compressor housing and an integrated bov on the housing also thats recirculated.

Instead of an inconel turbine shaft its made of titainium aluminide so its half the weight and come with a billet wheel with the extended tip technology. Oh. And the 7064 srand for 70mm compressor and 64mm exhaust wheel.

Just check the aite out. I just bought the 7064 and wont be getting it til mid january. But im looking forward to putting it on my first turbo build....

Well I spoke to the guys at Full Race...

They'll be getting a bunch of new split housing(divided) turbos in soon.

They recommended a T4 split housing EFR 6258
It has an internal Wastegate, internally integrated blow off valve and a built in boost controller solenoid...

Man would that simplify things!!

Any thoughts on the EFR 6258? http://www.full-race.com/store/turbos/b ... turbo.html

Should spool up awesome and provide some great top end power!

If you are stuck on an efr turbo i'd opt for the 7064 in the t3 housing.

Have you looked at forced performance or the garrett gtx series?

I'd get the gtx3017r with a .63 a/r housing. Should have insane spool and support 450whp efficiently.

You mean gtx3071r with a .63 a/r housing?

Yep. Mixed up my numbers a little.

Should be a very responsive, nasty street turbo.
