They're all build about the same. I would get one that's the cheapest, and has 360* swivel castors on all corners so you don't have to 'steer' it around.

Qft. Its kinda sad, iv never seen a real quality hoist. For some reason Id just like to see a really nice quality hoist in a shop sometime.

do yourself a favor and get a fold up one. Saves a ton of space when not in use and they are pretty cheap considering.....

If you get the harbor frieght one wait for the coupon so you can pick it up for $99.. I got mine a few years ago and was somehow able to combine the 20% off and $99 coupon and picked it up for just under $90 after tax.. It's has been used to pull engine about 3 or 4 times so far and no problems.. I just wish the boom was a few inches longer..

This one is rather beefy and comes with a leveler. Heavy SOB

This just got me thinking. Am I un-American because I buy foreign products or are domestic manufactures just not able to compete in a capitalist world economy? There has been a big push lately in the media to buy American. Isn’t capitalism is about competing, not brand name?

The digestible problem with this is there would need to be enough hungry in this country (poor and unable to get assistance from others) before labor wages would be low enough to compete with other countries.

Next hoist I get is going to be air hydraulic. I hate having to pump.

Just buy the air/hydraulic ram and bolt it on! Most of them are the same length as the ram thats already on the hoist, they are pretty universal for the northern/hf style

If I owned one, I would wait for the jack to die but I use my inlaws hoist. When that jack dies, it will be getting a hydraulic jack. When I get a house and 2 car garage, I will have space for a hoist.

I've owned one made in the US, and one made in China. The Chinese one sucks, the only reason I still have it is because I didn't want to truck Dads out my way when he died. The Chinese one didn't have holes that lined up perfect, and I had to replace the chain that came with it. The piston might lift a 383 mopar engine, the that chain would not.

actually this is what me and a few friends did. we picked up a new ram for 60 bucks that was dual pump, this way your pumping as the arm goes up and down. its very fast. this combined with a leveler makes pulling engines easy, we have about 8-9 jobs done with it.

i bought a hoist from harbor freight that folds up and is on casters. works just fine for pulling engines. have used it about 14 times so far to pull my engines. just gotta get the bigger one (you need the longer extension to get to the back of the engine)

of course it could. I built an 800 lb welding table this weekend and flipped it using my hoist [build them upside down] Had it all the way extended too , where it is rated for 500 lbs

Full time student for another semester. Part time at a parts store, and whatever is left for a small fab business. I primarily make Bmw swap parts for guys looking to go 24 valve in their e30's.

Needed another big table so I built one last weekend. 4x8 for the mig, 5x10 tig station.
