Where to buy "Walbro 255" locally for < $70 in a pinch

Post by airman »

So I had my Walbro 255 seize up on my while driving but locally I was able to limp to Advance auto parts on the way home from work yesterday.

I didn't want to be stuck but I didn't want to pay $100+ for a stock fuel pump. So I got online with my phone to see if they sold walbros; most auto-parts store workers aren't going to even know that name.

So I found a thread in the DSM world that said an Airtex E2448 was a comparable pump and it was $65.99. Turns out, it's a walbro pump in an airtex box. It even says walbro on the pump!

It comes with a sock, wiring harness, instructions, and a 1 year warranty. I checked around and the stats I find on it is "75 gallons per hour free-flow rate" which equates to about 283LPH. The free-flow rate for a walbro 255 is identical.

So if anyone needs a backup pump or are looking for an upgrade/cheap way to go dual walbro 255s, Advance auto (and probably anywhere that has airtex fuel pumps) will have basically a walbro 255 for under $70 with a 1-year warranty.

Keep in mind my experience from when I needed this is 2 years old at the time of this edit - open the box and check the branding on the pump itself to see if it's a Walbro. If it isn't, if it is an E2448, it still retains the same flow rate/specs but possibly more questionable quality.

Update
I want to highlight that these pumps are known for a short lifespan. I've updated the title to include the phrase 'in a pinch', simply because this should not be relied upon for as a long-term solution.

Keep boosting

Yikes! Look at the reviews! May work in a pinch, but I'd be weary of using it long term.

I'd honestly ignore those reviews. It IS a made-in-US walbro pump in an airtex box.

How many times have you bought a part from an autoparts store that worked fine with no issues and you took the time to leave a review on the product page for the website?

Depends on whether or not you plan on running E85 - I think even the most recently manufactured "255s" still don't always get along but your experience may vary - I've seen people run Wally 255s for years on E85 and others will tell you that they go out every 6 months. Walbro does have E85-certified pumps but I think those are the new 400LPH ones.

Glad this information is useful! As far as when the pump went - it had been going for a while. Basically the pump wouldn't prime/kick on every time. For about a week, I thought it was a wiring issue (I've got it hardwired/relayed). Got in, turned the key, no prime. Damn. Opened the hatch, checked my relay wiring, fuse, etc. Good. Pulled out the hanger and looked at the wiring joints in there. All good. Put it back in, key to on, heard it prime and I was good to go. HOWEVER, as soon as I turned the car off, the pump would immediately repeat the same thing.

So, I discovered that the pump was seized when I was going to leave work and had the same problem happen but even jumping it with 12v battery power while it's out of the gas tank did nothing.

So I knew it was seized. Banged on it with a screwdriver handle and got it to kick on. Went straight to Advance auto (barely made it there) and said "Hey, I need a fuel pump." Dude asks, "What year/make/model?" I tell him, "Doesn't matter". *perplexed look on his face*.

He had no idea what a walbro was, I asked him to look it up on the advance website to see if they carry it and he was like "durrr?". So I used the last 5% on my phone's battery to get online and google "Advance Auto Parts Walbro" and found a thread somewhere in the DSM world that said Airtex E2448 is a Walbro 255 in the airtex box.

So I bought it and was good to go!

The Walbro 255 that went bad I had bought used for $60 a little over a year ago. I'm tempted to crack open the shell of it and see exactly what went wrong and post up a little dissection thread on the forum!

Just called up Walbro and talked to one of the fuel pump guys. He explained that it is indeed a made-in-USA Walbro 255 in an Airtex box. He did say that Airtex does manufacture their own pumps too, but the E2448 is sold directly to them.

So if anyone had doubts about them being refurb/lower quality, hopefully that settles you down!

As far as cutting open the old pump I might have time this weekend and if not, it'll be after Wednesday.

Cheers

for reference, the chevy airtex pumps are not walbros and actually have extremely bad reviews of them consistantly dying in 6 months or less. guess the only thing to take away is it wont be the same for different engines if people want to use them for other cars, just make sure you do your research. figured i would be lucky getting one for my truck, then ran across a bunch of info saying otherwise.

Well, as I stated, (unless Walbro is lying) Walbro told me over the phone that these particular Airtex pumps (E2448) are indeed manufactured by Walbro and are genuine. Walbro just manufactures this pump for Airtex in the OEM market. Inside of the Airtex box is a fuel pump that has the Walbro logo stamped on the metal casing.

My pump might be on its way out, it indeed said walbro on it. I'll post up if I find it to be or not to be the problem.

It's definitely great for the 'in a pinch' jobs. I think mine may have been going out after 6 months, though. Running 93 octane.

I've heard they can go bad if you run on a low tank of gas often.

Yeah, but if you're stranded and need a new fuel pump that will still let you boost and not pay > $100 for an OEM one, eBay/zilvia isn't a very good way to get one in a hurry!
