do u know ur MPG?

Post by s13newbie »

Hello guys, currently my s13 is stuck in lakeland,fl and im stuck workin in orlando,fl. My truck and trailer got stolen bout a month ago so i havent even been able to go visit her at the parents house.

Anyway i have always been curious about what fuel economy u guys are getting once u go turbo.hope u guys can satisfy my curiosity. If/when u do respond please include the year of ur car, boost level & threshold, est. Horsepower, and about how much MPG u get currently.

My roommate is in the process of turboing his mazda protoge & is convinced if he uses a big turbo (t3/t4 with 61 ar of i think) so his threshold is bout 4000 RPM (according to him) he can keep his 24-25 mpg if he stays outta boost but still be able to have fun when over 4000 RPM. In theory sounds good but theory dont always work out. So i am wondering how turbojng a N/a motor effects fuel economy. Thanks kn advance to those to do respond.

91 s13 fastback, full interior
hx35 (normal boost level was 18psi 3600rpm, i stopped caring about how much fuel cost after i raised the psi past that lol). figure 400ish hp off that setup
bc 264 cams
1000cc injectors @base pressure 43.5 psi
8.8:1 pistons
93 octane
255 rear tires
235 front tires
stock drivetrain

17mpg on the enthalpy tune
about 18mpg on my megasquirt tune

boost was always instantly available on high way cruise at the 3200rpms
trick was staying off the boost, its hard, it calls to you.

Trying to stay as conservative as I could, I saw upwards of 25mpg highway. But normally about 18-23 highway/city mixed.

Built 9:1 block
Stock head (s13 cams)
HX35 - 15 to 18psi
880CC low-Z injectors
MSPNP2
R.I.P. 1990 Red Hatch - DOHC 5 speed // CP 9:1 - Eagle Rods - Clevite - ARP // Holset HX35 - 20psi daily - MSPNP2

Without fine tuning (just got the car running) I guessed about 14mpg highway, and considerably less when the BW S258 is in charge.

since the fuel is still burning and expanding on its way out of the head, a turbo can turn a lot of that expanding fuel into easier breathing which will bring extra efficiency and MPG, if he stays out of it.

Using this theory he should go with a smaller turbo. Not sure if it really works in the real world either, just tossing it out there.

He might not realize that boost is throttle and load dependent so a T25 doesnt make boost when cruising down the road on our 2.4, but a little throttle will put you into boost fast.

His idea isnt bad, but i'd just tune it lean at 1 or 2psi and be happy

18-22mpg D21 ka24det tuned ecu 265 tires and huge gearing (70 in 2nd at 6500) Great for a big T4 like i have waiting

^ 65mph in second! Damn! I'm getting about 20-25 mpg with city and highway driving. That's without hitting boost to much. With the t3/t4 60 trim, .63 A/R the KA is not building boost till about 3,200 rpms. I'm glad I went with this size turbo.

Awsome guye, just the kind of info i wanted. Im was tryin to figure out a way to have best of both worlds, good fuel economy and the ability to have the perma-smile when u hear the turbo spool and it sits u back in ur seat.

If possible, id like to hear from more of u guys to get as much input as possible. His goal with the mazda is 400 whp with good fuel economy but still really responsive.

My goal is more easily achieved, i want 250-300 whp but still retain least 20 MPG. and ive been offered a holset hx35 for 75$. Idk if thats overkill for my goals tho.

And yes "staying outta boost is hard, cuz it calls to you" never has a more true statement been said

I'm getting around 15 driving city, but on decently flat ground I get almost 30 mpg. I'd get better in the city, but keeping up with traffic is an annoyance. I know where I'm from I'd get almost 24 mixed in between country and town driving. 10 pounds on a t04e, stock bottom end, 94k, fmu. Still a blast to drive. I run out of gear at 25, 45, 70, 100, and around 120 is as high as I took 5th.

I don't because it's worth it to have a city car like a versa for dd. but if you wanted to know how to figure mpg it's not hard...

Would drive nice and get 27 to 30, cruising a lot. About 24 if hammering it NA, and then about 17 when I had boost at (12 - 16) psi. you end up putting your foot deep in the boost most of the time. It's irresistible.
