Straight Piped KA-T guys question

Post by sdaigle240 »

anyone end up adding resinator(s)? size, brand, type? sounds absolutly amazing ripping on it but the 2-3k cruise is a lil rough. thinking an 18" bubble res. no names are like 40$

I'm running an 18" summit racing glass pack. Sounds fantastic, doesn't drone at all. But I'm running a high flow cat, not sure how much of a difference that will make in overall drone. But at 21$ shipped I don't think you can go wrong.

welp figured it out. came to realize no muffler/resinator would target a specific rpm zone.

i remebered from acoustics classes that a helmholtz resinator can drastically atenuate specific frequencies if tuned correctly. that led me to branch resinators and some quick math. in short, its a caped offshoot on the exhaust leading to no where. exhaust cannot enter it as its closed on one end. sound however enters the branch, and by the time its traveled the tube and back, is 180* out of phase, and as you should all know from playing in the water as kids, waves can and in this situation do cancel each other out. pretty cool, and totally proven on various types of cars. people go nuts for this stuff. take a look at an s2k exh some time they all have branches, as do many aftermarket Z exhausts. i found most of my info on mustang, camaro and C4 forums.

possible videos, kinda hard to get and in car is fairly worthless.

^^^^^^^ +2.4
I have considered doing this as well since the drone at 2500 kills me on long drives. The only thing that I am wondering is if the added weight is worth the once a month that I drive it for longer than an hour straight.
My wife "haven't you spent enough time and money on that car yet?" my answer "no"

After supercharging my car, it was so friggin loud. I had to really be careful when I got on it so as not to attract attention from the popo's. I added two resonators from Vibrant performance and they made it sound so much better.

I had no resonators in my old exhaust and it really resonated at certain rpms as you guys said. I put a box muffler style resonator, cherry bomb style and a 3" suburban muffler.

It doesnt rattle your fillings at all and sounds a little louder than stock.. just
what i wanted.

I should have it all put together and get a video of it running within a few days

Just finishing my build. 3" downpipe, straight test pipe, isis cat back straight duals. Hoping the turbo will quiet it down so the rest of it isn't annoying, but if not Ill just swap out the straight test pipe for a resonated one. Ill let you know if I end up doing that.

I read similar stuff online other boards about helmholtz and res size, I decided to try an 18" no name, seemed larger was better for reducing drone frequency, but havent installed it yet. Also seemed most high end cat backs had resonators... Though I am also switch from side exhaust to ebay N1, as the drone at 2500 reflecting off the divider on the highway back into the car from the side exit was pretty annoying... Guess will see when I get back on the road.

My GT SPEC has a built in resonator. It sounds fantastic. The ole KA breathes through a 60-1/3in DP/3in GT spec to 3.75 post resontor.

running all 3" mendrel bend from turbo + RSR exmags, no catalytic converter, no resonator beside the exmags muffler ... kinda loud (122 decibel wide open throttle) on a real sound meter at 3' at 45° from the tip on neutral (no load). My open dump tube (screamer pipe) from the tial 44mm wastegate is louder anyway...

Still quieter than a bud with an rb25det swap and custom 3" line that put out 129 decibel on the same test. So my guess is rsr exmag does it job being a "quiet 3" exhaust". ;)

Still, I'm thinking of installing an apexi EGV to shut my exaust a little for a quieter cruise...

I need to get a video of mine. I have a race cat with a glasspack and exhaust similar to Isis screamer pipe. Without interior it was unbearable within few minutes. I started to put interior back in and now it is a little better. I may need to add a muffler or a longer glasspack towards the rear of the car to make it more quiet.

Well good news lol I forgot Im not running any boost right now (loose wastegate actuator) but once I get my other tune Ill let you know how it goes. I dont think it will be horrible, ran open down pipe on my old mk1 gti that was boosted. lol
