Re: New wiseco HD pistons?
Already talked to a buddy that works for Wiseco. They aren't coming out until May/June of 2014. No word on pricing yet. Supposedly thicker skirts, thicker wristpins, lighter, and able to support 1600 hp. Off the shelf KA pistons from them are rated to 1200 hp though so I really don't see much of a need for them unless you are shooting for 1000+ HP like me and a few other guys are.

Nate, how are you getting a set of HD's for the KA when they aren't released yet?

Re: New wiseco HD pistons?
Skirts collapsed on their off-the-shelf units so I asked if they could make some HDs.
New pistons have a strutted design for more strength in the skirt area and are about 50g heavier.
See pic.

Re: New wiseco HD pistons?
Can we get some pictures of underneath etc? Gunna have to bi*ch at my contact at Wiseco that they were saying these were a year out.... How much did they cost you?? Rumor about the bigger wrist pin true?
EDIT: At what HP/TQ did you collapse the skirts on the basic ones?

Re: New wiseco HD pistons?
I'm not going to give away all of Wiseco's R&D on a message board, especially after they were kind enough to work with me on this set of (custom) HD pistons and develop them for the KA when nobody else is. Look at the pic closely you can see the difference and the 'strutted' design. Maybe they are altering the design for mass production and that's why it's taking so long.
Pins are the HD tool steel units #S721
Not sure what caused the piston skirts to collapse but I was running 450-500whp. It was probably my fault as I unknowingly switched off the meth injection a couple times. Surprised I didn't do more damage, to be honest.

Interesting. I like the reduced skirt area design. Duno what that groove is between compression ring 1 and ring 2.
I wonder if this will heat up much more than the older design/cp/etc.
Is this just the one that you designed with them or is this the one that they'll full out manufacture?

I assume this design will be what Wiseco makes in the future...but you know how assumptions go.

Re: New wiseco HD pistons?
What's the purpose of the groove in between compression ring 1 and 2?
I tried to look it up online and it seems more prominent with custom pistons than base level aftermarket manufactured ones?

Re: New wiseco HD pistons?
The groove is supposed to keep the second ring from buffeting. It leaves a little volume for blow by past the top ring to accumulate reducing the pressure on the second sealing ring.
They started incorporating it prob 10+ years ago on pistons, (at least that's when I started seeing it).

Re: New wiseco HD pistons?
interesting. and it looks as if there is more material between the combustion surface and the positioning of the 1st ring.
appreciate the noticeable upgrades. curious as to how it will perform.

Re: New wiseco HD pistons?
Wiseco is now adding their Armor Plating to their KA24DE pistons as a factory standard. The plating is permanent and added to their metal matrix to help stiffen the dome. It's added to the ring grooves and wrist pin grooves as well. If you want a custom piston as pictured above, they can be ordered.
