How to keep underhood temps down
I'll cut right to the chase. It gets hot under my hood now that I have a turbo spooling. I'm afraid of the heat. The downpipe is wrapped, I have a shield for the BMC, and a turbo blanket on the exhaust housing. I've considered a vented hood to top it all off, but some are just ugly, and all seem expensive. So what things have yall done to keep things cool? I am not a big fan of propping the stock hood in the back. To any normal person it looks like your stock hood doesnt fit.
Also, does anyone know what hood it is that has the same stock bodylines, but appears to be a cowl induction hood? I have seen a few pics of a red kouki with it but I cant figure out what brand it is or where I could buy it from.

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
Have you ever thought about making your own hood? It would make a cool diy project. Or maybe open a vent up in your driver side fender?

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
no havent really thought about that. Honestly I would probably ruin the way my car looks if I tried to do it myself. I found the hood though.
Its an origin type2, and looks to be $800ish. Too rich for my blood

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
ohhhh thats a beauty.
I paid about that much for mine. It looks awesome, its light weight, and wents very well.
My turbo burns oil pretty bad, so the vents allow the oil vapors to escape very well.

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
With a vented hood you need to make sure the vent is in the right spot. The front vent on the hood above might help relieve pressure but the back one is probably in a high pressure zone. Raising the back of the hood wont help lower temps either. Actually i guess i shouldn't say that they won't. When the car is not moving they will help lower temps but once moving they would not be very efficient at lowering temps. The Dmax hood would be about the same. the front vents might help but the back ones might be doing the exact opposite except again when your car is not moving. You want the vent where the low pressure zone of the hood is.

Yeah I like the lines on the stock hood too and I feel the same way about the hood spacers; everyone just asks "why doesnt the hood fit right?". I've thought about the PoweredByMax hood spacers though only because they have gold-colored hood spacers, which stand out to a point where someone may be like, "hmm maybe the hood is supposed to fit like that":
... I dunno, right now I just keep the rad fans on full blast and have the heat wrap and blanket stuff on the exhaust side. I've heard ceramic coating is the way to go for lowering temps under the hood. Many ceramic coating companies claim a small hp gain with these coatings. By insulating the heat within the pipes supposedly it helps improve scavenging (engines ability to remove exhaust and draw in new clean fuel-mixed air), which results from an increase in exhaust gas velocity. Seems like a cool theory, but the ceramic coating reducing under hood heat alone is good enough in my opinion.
Oh and there are two types that I know of:
-3-layer ceramic plasma coating (insulating layer, heat-conducting layer, and barrier layer; also used to coat internal engine parts)
-1-layer metallic ceramic coating (*most common, cheaper, thicker coating than high temp powder coat)
.

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
I keep my car turned off to keep underhood temps down.
wrapping the turbo and using heat shielding (i used aluminum flashing, some people use old license plates) around the turbo helped me a great deal, and ducting the radiator helped my cooling system be more efficient.

Might I ask what you mean by ducting the radiator, beercan?

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
the stock bumper does not close in the path of the air from the bumper to the radiator (air leaks out the sides). Enclosing this with something (aluminum flashing, tar paper, etc) so it forces the air from the inlet of the bumper through the radiator grants the maximum amount cfm possible through the radiator.Qemyst wrote:Might I ask what you mean by ducting the radiator, beercan?

Ohh! Thanks. That makes sense. I might have to look into that for my own S13.

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
Guys ive been considering cutting inti the firewall area where the wipers used to be. im not running any wipers or the plastic part between the windshield and hood, so ill cut iut and weld in a 45° angled sheet metal 2.5 - 3 feet long in the space and itl leave 3 or4 inches of space for air to flow , and see into the engine bay from the interior

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
I just removed the rubber seal near the big plastic trim where the windshield wipers are, then used washers to space the back of the hood up a little. Yes, I know it looks weird but seems to help get some heat out though.

I cut a vent into my hood and have those 1inch spacers.

Re: How to keep underhood temps down
Maybe one day I might invest in a cf hood that has vents.
