Best oil for ka-t

Post by Bonomoskat »

Just wondering the best oil for a ka24de-t . I'm in va so the temps are around 30-40 winter and 70-90 summer. I bought some rotella synthetic 5w-40 I heard that was really good .

That's what I run and have run in all of my turbo cars. Just tried the comparable valvoline synthetic 5w40 diesel, seems about the same, which is good! Perhaps a little less oil usage even. Just buy whatever is on sale in a synthetic 5w40 diesel oil and you should be good to go

Because diesel oils don't have to conform to as strict of emissions regulations. This allows them to have extra soft metals in the formula, which helps tremendously with bearing life, as well as other additives. Plus all of them are made for turbos, high temperatures, and are cheap. Made to be over worked and under paid.

how often are you guys doing oil changes. I've heard every 2000 miles is safe but is that overkill?

I'm doing mine every 2k. Normally I'd have no problem going more but with a turbo ka you face a couple issues that kill oil. First off once you go turbo, 90% of us are screwing with the factory pcv system, which can go a long way for keeping moisture and other particles out of the oil. For instance I have my breathers going to an open can, great for venting the pressure, but not it's exposing the oil to open air. Moisture is bad for oil BTW. And lastly, we have a measly 4 quart capacity, when turbo this leads to stupid high oil temperatures, which quickly breaks down oil making it thinner and thinner and less protective. Hence why diesel oil that's built tough is awesome. I'm sure there are more reasons why, but I think it's safer to change more often, it's cheap oil, costs me 20$ a gallon and 5$ for a filter.

Since we are on the subject of oil, How about extending your capacity and keep the oil cool with an oil cooler? I am going to be running the Greddy thermostatic sammich adaptor. Without the oil cooler, I was getting up to a highway cruise temerature of 220F! That was really overworking my cooling system. Now i will be cooling the engine from the oil passages.

I've actually been considering running a cooler myself. They have pretty nifty ones on eBay that come with a remote filter housing. I've never measured my oil Temps, but I only do short pulls, 1/4 mile at most and let off, so not much time to heat it up. But with only 4 quarts I'm sure it could use some help. The xccessive oil pan with an sr20 bottom adds another quart capacity which is pretty nice too

You would be surprised at how fast that oil heats up. 2 pulls on the highway gets mine up to 220°f

I am in South Florida and ambient temps rarely go below 50*. 15w-40 may it be Rotella, Delvac, or any other brand. I have used interchangeably and the motor is clean.
