Hey Duncan, head over to supra forums. I know a couple of guys run coated JEs over there.
Heres some link to start out your search:

That should be enough to atleast let you know if its worth it!

Also all the supra guys tend to use HPC.
I prob run them also since they all seem to have good luck and the product has proven to work!

According to this website, ceramic insulation might be too much: http://webpages.charter.net/beckracing//page07.htm
"Ceramic insulation on pistons can insulate the piston too well. The piston stays cool while the very top surface gets so hot that the intake air is immediately heated on contact with the piston. The heated intake charge expands and reduces the air flow into the cylinder..."
That website actually recommends polishing the piston crown. There has been an arguement between polishing the pistons or bead-blasting the pistons. Here, people talk about the difference the two: http://speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... sc&start=0
Although I think there isn't a big enough difference to justify which method is better. I currently have the tops of my CP pistons polished.

Re: Piston Coatings
a customer car i did a built sr used some wiesco 9:1's that were coated. 3 months of hard use 401wheel hp things came up where i had to disassemble block. The high points or rigdes in the machine work of the piston on the thrust side were visible (the aluminum) and the coating was striped away, but in the valleys the coating was there. My assumption is its a bigger contact patch for the piston to be on the cyl wall liner.duncan351 wrote:Piston Coatings such as SwainTech or http://www.polydyn.com/

but the pistons sidewall thrust and non thrust looked great, the cylinder wall/liner looked great too for the amount of power. only the top of the cylwall was bad because of manifold debris got sucked back into chamber. turned out it was welding slag i missed during cleanup of the manifold i built. looked alot like detonation marks. looking back on it, i shoulda taken pictures.
that customer will be back though. I gave him a 400hp car and 3 months later he wanted 700hp.
I wouldnt get a 3rd party to coat them, i'd get some weisco's that are already coated by them or whoever they use.
I had my stock pistons bean blasted. It was mainly to remove the carbon buildup before I rebuilt my motor. Ceramic coatings are good. Calico does a good job. Now, for best bang for your buck, that is where you need to make the decision. Many say yea, others say maybe. I would research more into this. You know stock ka's can make 300 to 400. If this is your range, put the money into something else.
