need help car stalls and won't start.

Post by 96silvia »

ok so the other day my car all of a sudden just starts shuttering while I am driving
then acts like its not getting gas then dies.. so I turn the car over and the car wont start.
I let it sit for a few minutes then the car starts right up.
I floored the pedal and sounded good to about 3500 rpm then the car started to shutter and died. What would cause this? bad fuel pump? or fuel filter? the engine hasn't done that at all. I don't even know where to start looking. I think its fuel related, but I am not sure.

Other than the engine being rebuilt the rest is stock.

Hello,
Sorry to hear that something so stupid decided to happen...

The 3K RPM issue could be a Vacuum leak or a Crank Position sensor or even a Throttle possition sensor..

Like you mentioned you should check the Fuel Pump, and or the FPR

Have you checked all your spark plugs? Make sure they are in good condition.

Check the connections from the Battery and Back; It could also be a loose or damaged ground wire.

Did you go over a big bump? Park to close to curb that could have scratched or pulled something from under the car?

Edit: Turn the car on and start wiggling wires; Not to hard to pop them off, But hard enough for a split wire to loose connection..

It's prb not a bad wire but you never know. I had a car turning over with no spark for 3 days...we found out it was 1 measly wire near the Fuel Rail, Doing a wiggle test.

this thing has been running awesome since I rebuilt the engine. I haven't checked the spark plugs yet. I will do that when I get home. its funny as soon as it starts to shudder I loose power and no matter how much gas you give it its not enough. and the car just dies that's what made me think of the fpr or fuel pump

a few months back; Every time i hit a big bump My RPMS dropped and no amount of throttle will bring the needle up. My car would do this every time on Every bump, to the point where it shut down my car a few times.

It might not be the problem you are having; But the sputtering and just randomly dieing. Sounds like the spark issue i had when i hit a bump..

This was the loose wire i was talking about; Near the back of the fuel rail

Good luck man. Let us know the final verdict.

Does this happen every time now? Or does it not happen when the car is warmed up?

How well does it idle? does the idle drop and pop back up?

Try turning the car on and removing a cable from the battery. Just start with basic troubleshooting.. It is prb super simple like a loose Ground.

it happens when its cold or warm. My idle bounces between 400 and 700 rpm but that's because of the crank position sensor. its a 96 and I swapped a 90 z32 tranny in it. so this is causing issues.

yep.... mine did the same thing... driving down the street, hit a big enough pot hole or hard enough dip and it would stall out on me each and every time... and i would be stuck in that spot for about 5 min till it decided to crank back up..
NEVER found a solution to it... it just mysteriously fixed itself...!!! Dealt with that issue for about 2 weeks worth...
obviously something is loose somewhere but that somewhere can be anywhere.... and that is where the problem is cause you have no clue on where to start...

so an update on the issue. I thought it was the filter its not I replace it with a wix filter car still dies. Going to run a fuel pressure test on the car and see if its the fuel pump.

I will also check my wires.

To me it sounds like a problem on the intake side.

i had an issue with the fuel pump hose in the tank...the gas corroded the hose and the pressure was going back into the tank...check your fuel pressure

found it. it was a short in the wiring harness going to the distributor. I had to run a new wire to the ecu and that fixed the issue.
