VERY loud whistle/whine when engine is on, please help

Post by 240sxfan6882 »

This is my newphew's car with a rebuilt KA24DE engine that has been running Stock and flawless for the past 400 miles. On Friday he said that he began to hear the whistle/whine noise but it wasn't too loud.

He needed to replace the EGR solenoid and took off the intake manifold, replaced the part, and put it all back.

The car turned on, the RPMs were high, and the whistling noise began. We figured it was a vacuum leak. We did a vacuum leak test and found one, fixed it, and cranked it up... and the same very loud noise comes back. He double and triple checked the vacuum lines but they seem fine.

We went ahead and removed all of the belts so that only the crank pulley turned, same symptom. The water temp sensor is fine. Injectors are fine, injector harness is fine. The last time that we turned it on right after re-checking the vacuum lines it seemed fine, we revved it and the loud noise came back and the engine idles erratic again.
We are stumped! Please if anyone can help it would be awesome. The sound seems to come near the manifold water outlet that returns to the radiator.

here is a video that we took

THANKS! Fellas!

The TB gasket was cracked, replaced it with a new one, turned it on and the engine ran fine. Turned it off to bleed it, jacked up the car.. the annoying whistling sound is BACK! GRRRR

IACV, or AAC valves? all the proper lines connected?

I've not seen a stock'ish DE in quite some time. I forget what the hell is even on them..

Yes the IACV and AAC are hooked up properly with new hoses and clamps. I blew air into the IACV via the hose on the front of the manifold to see if I got a whistling sound, but nothing came up. It's just so darn loud!

Ill check the throw out bearing on the tranny and maybe spraying some carb cleaner around the manifold. It sounds like it's coming from the intake manifold area though.. but the alternator, water pump, power steering have all been disconnected with just the crank pulley turning... and still get it.

Update:
We noticed that a lot of white-gasoline fumes (smells strong of gasoline) is coming out of the exhaust.
I tested each spark plug and they fire.
The rotor rotates freely
Tried a new cap and nothing
Tried another MAF and nothing.
The injectors have new O-rings and pintle caps when the motor was rebuilt about 400 miles ago.

What could be causing it to blow gasoline fumes out the back if it has spark?

This is driving me nuts. thanks guys!

Maybe an injector o-ring or possibly the fuel pressure regulator is leaking vacuum.

Update:
I found that the harness that connects to the crank angle sensor on the distributor was short circuiting on the timing cover.
We are trying another distributor that for sure works but can't get the damn thing to turn on. Both cars were set at tdc when the distributors were pulled out. Well we found one possibility, tomorrow well try to turn it on again

my car does something similar to that but mine doesnt sart the noise til its warm and varies in pitch. its almost like a blow off but more annoying and im NA. ive eliminated all the emissions bs with my motor and checked every plate.

possibly a cam is too tight? or air passing the injector seats?

The injectors seat were cleaned up recently and even added a little RTV on the outer edges to aid with sealing.
The whistling noise is no more after we changed to another distributor.
The car is idleing off still, and there are white gasoline fumes coming out of the rear.
This is what we have checked:

-the crank angle sensor, the water temp sensor, and injector's resistance check fine with a volt meter.
-We switched to another distributor, same issue.
-We tried another MAF, same issue.
-We tested for spark in each cylinder and we do get spark.

What would be causing unburn fumes to be coming out of the back tail pipe? The engine stays on and doesn't bog hard, but it idles off.

Leaky fuel injector, bad FPR? Maybe bad O2 sensor?

I appreciate any help fellas!

Hey, glad to hear you found out where the annoying whistle sound was coming from.

Your IACV could be shot.

Here: Check out the info on page 110.

Yes yes and yes but O2 doesn't kick in till closed loop remember so is it only spewing whiteness before warm?

If it happens all the time and all those check out, take a look at the knock sensor, if timing is retarded that would make sense on dumping fuel and running weird.

Also the temp sensor(Not temp sending unit) will make the KA run all sorts of weird if defunct.

FIXED!!!!

The problem ended up being a leak between the intake manifold gasket to the head near cylinder number 1, a leaky air regulator hose, and a leaky PCV valve, and a wrong vacuum hose on the EGR solenoid valve.

I whooped this kid's ass making me go through all that crap by not double checking his damn work.

Anyways, thanks a ton for the help fellas!

Yea I'm hoping mine is the gasket. I changed mine today and added a little rtv just waiting for full cure before testing. My gasket was only a month old and was trashed
