Temp issues

Post by s14tilo »

KA24DE:
I'm having issues with my temps every now and then. Temp gauge rarely reaches operating temp. Always runs cool. If it's freezing outside, the temp gauge hardly moves at all and the heater blows cool.
And every so often the fan continually runs and causes belt squeal over 3k rpms.
I'm assuming it's the thermostat but why would the fan stay on when it's running cool?
I haven't really found any definitive answers for all the symptoms. Thanks.

Sounds like a water pump or thermostat issue.

O.E. thermostat has a rubber seal around the actual piece that opens, it will deteriorate and start leaking allowing coolant to flow constantly. Just replaced mine for this issue last week, it would take about 5 miles for any heat to start and it never was "hot".

The fan issue: Is it the stock clutch fan?

Yes, everything is stock.

Also, a few years ago the temp used to get really hot and all of a sudden would drop to operating temp. I forgot it used to do that. That's originally why I thought my thermostat was sticking.

I don't drive the car much anymore.

Replace the thermostat.

As for the fan, a clutch fan spins all the time, it will "tighten" up and engage when it senses hot air.

I personally haven't had a bad clutch on any KA. Not saying it can't happen but its hard to diagnosed one over the interwebz.

Again, it spins all the time. But, if it sounds like a freight train at higher rpm it may be staying engaged. A new fan clutch may be needed.

I figured. Thought I'd get your opinions though.

Yeah, the fan seriously sounds like a semi truck, haha. Doesn't happen often though.
