Oiling issue?
Oiling issue?
I seem to keep having an issue with number three rod. Three different engines and all three have had issues with number 3 rod bearing. Anyone else have this issue. Or an answer to this issue?

Re: Oiling issue?
Spinning number three bearing. 2 engines were stock the third was built. clearances were right on spec. New oil pump, etc.
All three spun number three rod bearing. No part or system has been the same on all three. The built motor was running a oil cooler and still always seems to be number 3

Re: Oiling issue?
What oil and filter?
What conditions did the engine fail under?

Re: Oiling issue?
I believe I found the issue with the last motor but just seems weird that it is always number 3 rod.
Mobil one oil and filter. Drifting when each one has gone.
I had stock oil pan and with the side loading on this last engine it was uncovering the oil pickup

Re: Oiling issue?
Do you have the cars tuned? Is there gas in the oil?

Yes engine was tuned each time. No gas in the oil.

Subarus tend to be pretty hard on oil, but M1 5w-30/10w-30 tend to shear down very fast.
Switch to something a little more robust like M1 0w-40/Rotella T6/German Castrol. They are probably cheaper as well.

Re: Oiling issue?
Ok so changing the oil weight will explain why it is always the number3 rod??
Re: Oiling issue?
It may be the culprit or you have extremely bad luck with that rod. I would run a heavier weight oil. I run 5W-40.

Re: Oiling issue?
#3 rod has always been the first to go on KA's.1bdapl wrote:Ok so changing the oil weight will explain why it is always the number3 rod??
Reasoning is probably due to it receiving the lowest amount of oil flow.
The oils I mentioned have produced very good wear numbers on numerous engines under extreme duty such as racing. OIl is more than just the numbers on the front of the bottle. The biggest variables are HTHS, wear additives, detergents, and Used Oil Analysis results. Considering it has the single largest impact on bearing life, I would look into it.
Also, for weight arguments sake, your 5w-30 turns to a 20w at 224*F. Say you hit 250*F, and you are at the lower end of 20w oils. And these numbers are all based on fresh virgin oil. Once it has been in the pan for a couple months and has sheared down from use, your even further up the creek... More robust oils will withstand shearing down better. This is why I run Motul 300V in my track car.
