People with AMS manifold, turbo bolts tightening

Post by flip240 »

Anyone here have an AMS manifold? 3 of the 4 bolts came loose causing an exhaust leak. With the turbo still in the car, I removed the downpipe which allowed me access to 3 out of 4 bolts. Unfortunately the bolt at the front closer to the engine looks pretty inaccessible. I'm not sure if there's a way to get to it without taking the assembly out of the car. Has anyone here been able to get to it while its in the car?

This is a temporary fix, I'm looking at something similar to the Full Race bolts that use a combination of stainless steel studs, inconel nuts, and Heico-Lock washers. Inconel has a higher heat range than stainless steel which is why stainless steel lock washers lose their shape at the high temperatures around the turbo and manifold. Problem with their kit is that its meant to thread into a m10x1.5 manifold and retain using m10x1.25 nuts where the AMS manifold threads in using m10x1.25

You could try loosening all the Turbo CHRA bolts that hold it to the turbine housing. Once you remove the compressor and CHRA you should have some more room. Alternatively you could try and see if you could get a crow's foot in there.

For some reason I didn't think of that, or I did and thought I would ***** up the wheel with my shaky hands (on the account of being a former crack addict). Either way, I'm going to try that this weekend since it's a hell of a lot easier than removing the manifold/turbo assembly. I might also try cutting down an open wrench and welding a bar at an angle to go around the CHRA.

Your probably going to need to use lots of penetrating lube. Soak the turbine bolts over night. My suggestion would be to find a plastic deadblow hammer for assistance.

FWIW, I was able to tighten it down using a 14mm wrench with an offset head. In my case it was pointless because I found the oil drain gasket leaking so I pulled the whole turbo assembly. Bought m10x1.25 inconel turbo studs from GCG Turbos in AUS, installed them with Heico-Lock washers, put in new gaskets, and tightened up my turbo support bracket while I had access.
