Z32 trans kit with White Bunny clutch- starter problems

Post by wannaboost? »

Recently I converted to the z32 trans setup using an Xcessive kit. I have had starter issues since day 1. About half the time you try to start it, the starter engages but doesn't turn the engine over. Instead, it makes an extremely loud grinding noise. I always thought that it had something to do with the flywheel-starter contact area (they state that some flywheels may need the teeth on them machined to help the starter grab).

Well after pulling the trans off, I have found that the starter has been catching the pressure plate on it's way to the flywheel teeth. This explains why the grinding noise happens about 50% of the time. The only reason I can think of for this would be the larger diameter "White Bunny" z32 clutch setup I'm running is just that much wider than the stock pressure plate. I've also concluded that the reason a stock trans doesn't mind the diameter of a White Bunny setup is because the starter engages on the back side of the flywheel and the z32 kit has the starter engaging from the front side of the flywheel.

Has anyone had these kind of issues before, and what did you do to go about fixing it?
And if not, I hope I've at least saved someone some trouble.

Nis720 fitted his with the starter in the stock orientation like this:

Granted he was using a Mazworx adapter plate and a truck with a SOHC, but maybe the xcessive adapter could be modified to accommodate the starter in the stock location? Do you have any pics of the trans with the stater installed?

are you sure you have the trans matching the flywheel/clutch?

na and tt trans are different but have the same bellhousing bolt pattern

Couldnt you just shim the starter and use longer bolts?

after looking at this again, maybe the issue is the pressure plate... is it overlapping the teeth on the flywheel?
what clutch is it?

Hey guys,

I have not had a chance to dig further into this situation yet. I will try and post a solution whenever I do.

The pressure plate does not stick out near the flywheel teeth.

The clutch is a stg 4 comp clutch for z32.

Did you use both shims that came with the kit? I did not read through but I do not have issues with grinding.

Which spacers did you receive? Are you talking about the flywheel spacer and the large bellhousing spacer/adapter? If so then yes, I'm using those. I still haven't looked into this. I will most likely fit the starter on engine side (factory location) somehow and post up how I did it.

These.

I just lost another starter today. This is the 3rd one. I am going to cut out the starter hole for the starter to fit in just right rather than drilling new mounting holes on the starter.

Check out what Rosado did.

I drove the car to work Saturday morning. I went to leave and no go. Starter shot. So today, I had some time and I notched out the bell housing so the pulsar starter can go right in. I only have to modify the starter on the bottom bolt hole. After completing this, it turns great. It is actually faster than previous new starters.

Since we create two new mounting points on the starter, it changes the angle of the engagement which probably hurts the solenoid by adding more stress. My last starter solenoid did not even eject. It stuck. When I opened the starter, I can see a groove that was made by the solenoid engaging. So hopefully by using the stock starter mounting holes, the angle is where it needs to be. Only time will tell.

I get faster starts and it sounds healthy. Here is how I modded my housing. Hopefully the stater lasts like it is suppose too.

I did not receive and have never even seen those spacers. I wonder if washers would yield the same result.

Hey SUPAKAT, do you have a "white bunny" clutch/flywheel setup?

RB20 FW with Z32 NA Clutch. The spacers are pretty thin like .020.

Had the same problem, put a washer on the bottom bolt, no grinding and starts every time. Running stage 5 z33 with forged DOHC flywheel.

Awesome. I'll try that. Do you have any idea how thick the washer was?

No man sorry I don't, I just tried something I had Latin around. So nice to have this fixed...now I'm just worried about the spacer.
