Drag Wheel/Tire Critique

Post by gawath »

I am looking at purchasing a pair of drag racing wheels and tires for my stock suspension 1995 Nissan 240SX SE (5-lug). I need feedback from the experienced if I will have clearance issues with the following setup.

Planning to get the Summit Racing Fast-Five in 15”x10”, 5”x4.5” bolt circle with a 6.5” backspace. Reason with going with the wider 10” vs the 8” is that the wheel will create a flatter area for the tires when going down the track (stability).

Image

Tires and size options in order of preferance will be (M&H Racemaster/Hoosier QTP/Mickey Thompson ET Drag):
1) 28”x11.5”x15” (My concern is the 28” height and 11.5” diameter rubbing)
2) 28”x10.5”x15” (Height may rub and diameter of tire may fit)
3) 26”x11.5x15” (Height will fit, but not too sure on diameter)
4) 26”x10.5x15” (This will fit from researching other setups.)

u could go with the 8 wide, the weight of the car will flatten it out.if it was on a 6 inch rim it would pull the edges down to much.the 10 will work though too.

+1 on the rim and 26”x10.5x15 fits perfect and plenty of traction if ur under 500whp.
arias 8.8.1,615 tomie inj.,clevite bearings,arp 10mm hs,z32 maf,jwt ecu,intake butterflies removed,all emissions removed,cx rad. dif dual fan controller,altima dual fans,fidanza fw,stage 3 clutch,solid d shaft,j30 rearend,energy suspension bushings,kyb struts,155 lbs weight reduction.
currently n/a.

Thanks for the feedback boker240. Another reason for going with the 10" rim is if in the future I do make more power, I wouldn't have to buy another pair of wheels. I will take your advice and get the 26x10.5x15. Does anyone have any experience with my tire choices in this size?

what rearend and axles are you going to run? how much power are you going to start out with? what are you using to control boost? what clutch and transmission are you running?

if I know this then I can tell you how you will like your tire choices

Ive always run the 15X8 5.5bs wheels. 28x11.5x15 et streets, been good for 1.4 60's so far. I think the 15x10 with 6.5 bs might stick out a bit

Weld Racing Draglites 15"x10" w/ 7.5" backspacing in back with 20mm spacer and ARP extended studs on 27x11.5 Hoosier Quicktime Pro...all it needs is a little fender pull on the rear and I'm set so I can flatten out the camber some more.

Greg Weld Dragstar 17"x4.5" w/ 2.25" backspacing in front with 15mm spacer and ARP extended studs on 26x4.5 M&H DOT Front Runners (clears 26mm Z32 calipers)

I would check the weight of the Summit brand wheels, I am guessing they are just a forged look alike. An actual drag wheel from Weld, M/T , Centerline the list goes on will probable be half the weight. Look at racingjunk, ebay, or craigslist for a good set of used. A reduction of rotational mass in the wheels equals good things in the et department. :D

I've seen the weight of them and they are over 20lbs for a 15x8 iirc. Get some name brand wheels.

Unless you plan to make well over 500whp:
15x8 weld draglites or prostars with 5.5" backspacing
26x10.5x15 bias ply slick or dot cheater slick

This will be plenty of tire for the car, then you just need to learn how to drive it. I highly recommend bias ply tires for a manual car.

What are your opinions on a Weld Draglite in 15x9 with 5.5" backspace? Will it fit in the rear of the S14 without rubbing?

I won't fit with a decent size tire on it. The s14 has a lot of inboard space and likes higher backspace wheels.

A 15x9 with a 6.5" backspacing would work well, but are hard to find unless you want convo pros.

I've got 26x10.5x16 et streets on z32 wheels. Not drag wheels but they work great. I cut a 1.55 60' with 345ft/lbs in my SR car and consistant 1.6's. With more power I could see high 1.4's being possible.

What's the biggest backspace that would fit S13? Is 6.5" OK? Will there be enough clearance between strut and rim/tire? Looking to get some 15x9 rims if I can find them at all (4-lugs)

Do Weld Draglites work with stock studs and nuts? Says smth. about "shank style lug nuts".

Am I asking too stupid questions, or no one really has the answer? :)

What do you think of these wheels? 8.25", nice +25 offset, and no special lug nuts (I hope)

For the weld wheels you'll need these lug nuts. Just need to make sure the wheels you get match the shank length of these lug nuts.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-LUG-NUTS-WEL ... 881wt_1163

As for those wheels you just posted sure they'll work, but most of us are 5 lug. Only real problem I see with those wheels is the weight. A real weld draglite/prostar only weigh 12-13lbs for the 15x8's. I would imagine those are close to 20lbs.

Alot of foxbody mustang guys run 4 lug draglites in the size and offset that fit our car. Might try looking on some local mustang forums, if you have any of those around you.

If you're serious about wheel weights check out weldracing.com they have a pdf you can download that I'm pretty sure includes the weights.

I know these weights from the head already :D 15x8 Welds in 5.5 BS are 14.5lbs; these 8.25 wheels are supposed to be 17lbs. Minus lug nuts weight.
Foxbody Mustangs are 4x4.25, not 4x4.5 from what I gather?

Correct, but the 4 lug draglites have a dual pattern (4x4.25 and 4x4.5).

Do you have spring spacers? Your rear looks tall. Here is mine. Still need to roll and pull the fenders.

You will probably need coilovers just to be safe. My car sits up some with my street setup but looks slammed on my slicks.

Are you trying a true 28x10.5? I had planned on running stock springs with koni yellows in the rear.
