Rear differential options

Post by oneoverwrx »

Hey guys I'm mainly checking to see if there are any new options for rear diffs and things. I have an s13 with a turbo ls1 setup in it and I really want somewhere in the neighborhood of a
3.50-3.70 gear. I also would really like to stay 4 lug due to having multiple sets of wheels already. I know the r200 is plenty strong as I have already been 1.41 60' on a stock welded unit with stock axles.(last year on nitrous). This year the car will leave softer but I am going to need enough gear for 160mph traps. I would love to know if there is a custom r&p I can buy or if someone is selling r200s set up with the 3.54 gear or any other options too. thanks in advance

You may want to use the Nissan Q45 rear end 90-96 year. It has a 3.54 ring and pinion ratio in it. For the s13 you will have to change the cover for your own, but for the s14 you can keep the Q45 one. The 90-96 Q45 (R200) features the same beefy 6-bolt 30-spline axles, hubs, and output shafts used in the 90-96 Nissan 300ZX TT which is a R230. Ours is a R200. The 90-96 Q45 had a 3.54 final gear, and the 97-01 had a 3.69. As far as axles go (one from a Z32 driver side and the other from the Q45 driver side to be used on the passenger side).

1. 90-96 Q45 differentials can use s14 differential input flanges.
2. 97-01 Q45 differentials can use J30 differential input flanges because they have the same ABS sensor on the differential case and input flange.
I hope this helps.

People swap 4.09 gears into the q45 rear end, I don't see why you couldn't swap that R&P into your diff.
I had always thought the Q45 diffs had a longer snout for some reason...

I'll probably just give it a shot. I'd really like taller gearing.
Nope the housing is longer because of the ABS sensor. I'm running a differential flange off my old S13 open diff on my q45 pumpkin. The length comes from the flange itself, not the pinion.

I was able to reuse my stock driveshaft after swapping the flange. Only had to grind down the housing a bit to clear the nuts/bolts. I did the whole differential/axle/hubs swap of course...

Thanks for the info. I guess I am wanting to just use the q45 r&p in my housing. Does anyone put these together and sell them?

Just get the q45 diff and tap the input for your driveshaft. You can keep your 4 lug hubs and all you will need is the z32 and q45 axels from oriely's. I paid $240 for the axels and they took my stock s14's as cores. I can find you a diff iyou would like. We are both going to have the fastest S-chassis in Kentucky. I have a BW S475 going on an alum 5.3L with a glide as we speak. It will be running this fall on boost and next month on motor.

thought the s13 and s14 had different size driveshafts, that article leads you to believe they are the exact same. doesnt even mention the variants with the abs

Well it appears that a 28" tire will fit in the back. My 28x9s fit very well. They measure 27.3 tall. I think with a touch more pulling of my fenders and maybe slightly raising the car up a true 28 would fit. Which should give me enough gear for what I need. I don't think I will have any breakage issues with the turbo set up but if I do I'll probably go to the q45 diff.
