What would retard timing when motor gets warm?
What would retard timing when motor gets warm?
Basically my car runs great when I first start it up, runs strong and I can spin the tires. But as soon as it warms up it gets very sluggish/ slow. It feels like the ECU is retarding the timing pretty bad. What would cause this? It's a stock KA24e(NO turbo), everything stock. Please help me out, I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. I have changed the Coolant temp. sensor, and the injector o-rings so far.
Thanks,
Alex
Thanks,

Both high intake air temp (IAT), high water temp (CLT) can retard timing.

Hey thanks for the response. By high water temp (CLT) do you mean the coolant temperature sensor?
Re: What would retard timing when motor gets warm?
Yes, CLT = coolant temperature

sorry to butt in here... but figured you might know. do you know the bin location of the map or table related to the stock IAT sensor? would be quite happy if i could tune some retard as a function of temp on a modified ECU ( Calum RT).

Your best bet is NismotronicSA.
It has all tunable tables and constants defined (including IAT and CLT fuel and timing trims) in an easy to use interface with extensive data logging, among many other useful features.

Re: What would retard timing when motor gets warm?
so today I tried another ECU and got a new coolant temp sensor. No luck. I guess the next things to change are: distributor, MAF sensor, and IAT. What do you guys think?

Re: What would retard timing when motor gets warm?
Remember there are two temperature senders/sensors. One for the gauge and one for the ECU.
@sdaigle240 - in a U12 SOHC bin the IAT timing retard map is at 0510. Not sure if it's the same in an S13 SOHC bin.
oops, just looked at your build -DOHC, so ignore the above.

Re: What would retard timing when motor gets warm?
so you know it, but would rather not say? i have a perfectly good working RT ECU, and am not in the market for a new one - well aware of your offerings. I am however in the market for knowledge for myself and to share with the community.OnTheChip wrote:Your best bet is NismotronicSA.
thanks anyway nomad! wondering how you even go about finding this stuff.
OP
wonder if it could be fuel and not timing? like maybe a bad O2 causing it to run rich. - although O2 feedback only effects cruise not WOT. if its not breaking up i would think your ignition components are up to snuff.

The distributor was off by a tooth. I've been messing with KA's for to long for this NOOB mistake. I'm truly embarrassed
