The Final Rebuild- Update: 2/22/2013 It's Been A Great Ride

Post by Lance »

I've been apart of ka-t.org for a few years now, and have been through a few different phases with my car. Including four different turbos and four different motors. Yeah, I know a little more than usual.

The motor that's in the car now was on it's last leg for close to a year. Losing compression gradually and smoking more and more everyday. Until one late night if drifting finally did her in. I would not go through the trouble of putting another stock block motor in the car just to have it blow up again. So I'm going to build one.

The goal once the build is done is to be a well balanced/very competative race car.

The motor getting ready to be pulled some time soon.

New exhaust. The old one was too loud and gave me a headache after a long drive.

a few more pieces, a spare front end and some chuki sideskirts

This is the soon to be built block torn apart on the stand.

I've already had the head decked cleaned and the valve stems replaced.

Garrett core intercooler
BikiRom ECU

How many motors did you blow on the bikirom? Was it just because you were running high boost for years or what?
It's always broken.

The BikiRom has been great to me. With it I was able to make the car run soo much better in all aspects. Every motor that has blown has had over 120k miles on it before it was boosted.

I'll give you a run-down of the past motors and their reason for giving up.

1st:
Setup-T3 super60, 370's, safcII
**** stock wiring to the fuell pump lead to a voltage drop and a lean condition at WOT on a road course. Detonated and blew all ringlands in every piston.

2nd:
Setup-T3/T04E 50trim, 480's, safcII
Wastegate diaphram ripped at WOT during a roadcourse event. Wastegate shuts and causes me to run upwards of 27psi for about 2 seconds. Blows one ringland and am able to limp the car home.

3rd:
Setup-T3/T04B, 480's, safcII
Do to cracked lower radiator and horrible stock temp gauge. Car managed to run with no coolant for about 5 minutes, than blew out the two freeze plugs in the back of the head. Motor seazed right after.

4th:
Setup-GT32, 480's, BikiRom
Had the timing tuned to run with no filter on the maf because there was no room. Decided to make one fit one day while not thinking about adjusting the timing map. Drove the car down the street, made a pull. Once I got back to my house, noticed the car sounded a bit funny. Compression tested it and number 2 was at 125psi. Hooked up the bikisoft and made another pass while logging and noticed with the filter it was in another part of the map. A part with about 6 more degrees of timing.

However this motor was able to last about a year of daily driving, 2 roadcourse events, a few auto-x's, and drag racing almost every sunday night at 12psi. Oh yes, it dynoed 295whp and 272wtq in this condition. And I believe the BikiRom was the key to keeping this motor going as long as it was.

The pic in my signature was at a drift event on the handicap motor also, lol

haha wow you've been through a lot. Weird your TP was so much lower with the filter. I didnt know you could run without one on an maf based car, mine acts weird as ***** without it.
It's always broken.

What clutch are you using with the JGY Flywheel? What diameter face does it have?

I'm using an RPS Max Street Disc. They JGY is just a lighter replacement to stock. So I'm pretty sure it's the same diameter as stock, whatever that is.

lmk if you need anything. BTW- I wish I would have listened to you a month ago and gapped the plugs down. I just figured they were fine where they were the whole time, well come to find out most were gapped around 30 or so, easy fix.......just the last I tried. Thanks again

lol!

What rotrs are you running? The orange ones or the slotted ones?
I like the set-up! Why did you stop with the 480 injectors? Ended up upgrading them?
How do you like the GT32? Didn't want to up to the R? Too much $$ lol!

I'm looking into the GT32, but I'm thinking about getting the GT30R for the extra money just to get that LOW boost!! :D:D
Back on the road since March 5th, 2008 :D. Love Boosting again!

Under construction! 25psi?? December 2010

I will be running the two-piece rotors, the ones with the red centers.

I've had the 480's for a while. I chose those because I used to have a SAFCII and that's the biggest it could control. I will most likely be upgrading, but I'm able to made over 300whp with the 480's and that is enough for me for now. I just want to drive the damn thing. I'm not soo worried about pushing the limits horsepower wise.

I love the GT32, but for some reason mine always spooled slower than most everyone elses. Hopefully with the new motor I can find a way to eliminate that,

He's on STANCE coilovers, and in the pics he's on his r-comps too so it does toss around the car a bit more.

here's a thread I posted way back with pics of his car

Update

The motor was pulled last weekend, without too much hassle

Image

Image

Damn that's dirty!

I went and picked up the block tonight and will be getting started early tomorrow. Should have the motor completely together by the end of the day, taking my time.

Oh and Tommy, the place I took it was Meyers Machine Shop in Marrero. This guy does awesome work. I spied a few $20k+ motors he was working on. My stuff took a little longer because he was having trouble with a few other projects but says he can usually get 4 cylinders out within a week and a half. I told him I may have a few friends coming to him for work.
