Demise of the 302 build

Out one night at a domestic spot watching a bunch of muscle run on the street with some buddies. After a few races one of them says i should do a v8 swap in the s13. One of the kids (friend but, not that close of a friend) that was there with us said his dad (who owns a mustang shop) would sell me a full 302 swap for 500 bones. So i figure 300$ for a custom drive shaft and 200$ for random materials to make mounts and an exhaust. So i told them if they could sell my ka24e-t swap for 1K i would do it. A few days pass and they find a buyer for me. Before money exchanges hands and i pull the swap i call the kid to make sure his dad was cool with the deal and he said its good to go. So i sell my swap with all my extra ka parts and a couple weeks later i call the kid and he gives me the # to his dad's shop. I call and after BS'ing with his dad for a few minutes i ask him when would be able to come pick up the 302 swap and he doesn't have clue what i'm talking about. So i tell him what the story was and he said his son never mentioned it to him and the swap would run me 1K. So, more less that kid screwed me.... I spend the next month or so searching the local craigslist and junkyards. I found one in the junk yard that was complete for the most part. I tune it over but, the plugs were removed? I pull it anyway and after i get it out i drop the oil pan to find two shattered rods. Waste of a day...... Finding a mustang T5 is harder than what i thought it would be and about 500$. Now i'm opened to doing any nissan swap be it a ka, sr, ca, rb or what ever. After not finding much a couple ka's pop up on nico and they are 8 hours (round trip) away. So i make the trip to get a S13 ka24de with a blown HG and 130K on it for 200$. That is where i am today after tearing it apart last night and wishing i hadn't sold all my extra parts with my swap that i now need.

End story

So last night i tore apart the ka i bought with a susposedly blown HG apart . This thing is dirty as hell inside. I drained what looked like 5 quarts of mud from the oil pan. No joke this stuff looked like pudding. The cams had surface rust all over them some lobes looked worse than others. Once i got the pan off i found most of the timing components in it (kid told me it had a light timing chain rattle). Well just like a ka24e i had the tension side guide on the lower chain was completely gone and the chain had worn a hole through the coolant passage in the front cover so i didn't have a blown HG. I got the cylinder head off and it looks in worse shape than it is. I think the biggest thing it needs is a bath like the rest of the engine. The pistons and cylinder walls look fine other than some carbon build up on the pistons. All the bearings were shot but, that was expected with the coolant oil mix that had been in there. The bearing surfaces on looked good (thank god). I hope to have the short block reassembled in a few weeks. I'm going for an all around fun street car with build this time with minimal lag. Probably a small T3 of some sort running 12-14spi. So far i have picked up 550cc injectors and bought a megasquirt kit. I still need to find a s13 dizzy as i didn't get one with the engine.

Hey dude just read your thread, sucks this kid b/s'ed you. I would have to pay this a**hole a visit and have a few werds with him, but thats just me. I saw you mentioned that you need a s13 dizzy, I have a spare motor. I have pay-pal. and I ebay alot. my score is 100%. If you need the dizzy and timing cover let me know, I'll let this stuff go on the cheap.

Yeah, i know but, i thought he was a friend. I'd hung out with him before and talked to him almost every time i went out cruising for the past 2 years. Not just some kid i met that night. Needless to say i haven't talked to him since. I went out and traded 3 s13 ka24e ecu's, 1 stanza ecu, a live edit board for the stanza ecu, and chip burner to the kid i sold my swap and all my parts to for an alternator, starter, tranny, j30 vlsd (this is a couple weeks after i went out and bought one ), and all the part to do the single belt setup. So far i've used 700$ from the 1K i sold my old setup for. Should have this one done for <1500$. Might have a turbo later this week.

It would be cheaper and easier if i just paid you to ship it. Save up both some gas money and driving time. I wouldn't want you to have to go out of your way for hook me up with a part for free. If you find out what shipping will be i can paypal it to you or send a cashier's check.

That really does suck about the kid lying. It sounds like what happened to me. I buy this motor for $250 that is "Freshly Rebuilt" but the dude sold his car. I get it home, and he must have left it uncovered outside because when I pulled it apart to make sure it was rebuilt right, the 4th cylinder was filled with rainwater and the pan was filled just like yours with oil pudding. Either way, hope you can salvage most of the parts, and if you need any s13 accessories for the motor (brackets, IM or pieces from it, or dizzy) just PM me. I have an s14, so no need for all the extra stuff.. Good luck with your build!

I'm wondering if this was a setup from day one just to get ur motor... And to leave u hanging dry...
Seen this done a few times here locally, better yet a local guy here builds ka-ts for people, then after the motor is in and fully tunned, the car is mysteriously stolen 2 weeks later... They had an odea that it was the builder but no rock solid evidence...

But yea sux that **** like this happens. As many have said, pay him a visit and then let him wake up in the hospital...

kids a douche but, what ya going to do :dunno: ....let it go and move on to something better

Most of the engine is salvageable. Might need some cams if these dont clean up (248/248 setup maybe??). It was some what warm out yesterday so i went and power washed everything. Everyone loves clean head.... :lol: .......block, front cover, engine in general. I hope to paint the block and have the short block back together this weekend. I'm going to pickup a turbo off a 2000 f250 friday for 100$.

I want to remove the valves to inspect and clean but, my normal valve spring compressor tool wont work on this cam over bucket design. What tool do you guys use? The big c-clamp vice grip style ones?

Big thanks to ILuvS13s who is hooking me up with a dizzy. I'll let you know when i receive it (money sent).

Well i put in some serious time yesterday to get some stuff done since i was busy all weekend. I honed, cleaned, painted and assembled the short block. The rings in every pistons were seized pretty bad. Removed all of them cleaned the dome, and ring grooves then re assembled. I plastic-gauged the bearing and the mains are in spec while the rods are loose.....with in limit but, loose. Then earlier today i removed all the valves and power washed the cylinder head. Its night and day with what i started with. Going to lap all the valves and hopefully have it re assembled by the weekend and back on the block. Next weekend i want to tear down the oil pump and see what kinda condition its in and put a bead on the groove that the timing chain rubbed in to the coolant passage.

^picked up that f250 turbo.....i didn't even notice it when i bought it but, this thing is backwards to a normal turbo. The turbine inlet comes off to the left instead of the right when looking at it from the back and the compressor outlet is opposite also. Its going to be a pain in the ass to use it but, it'd be a waste of money if i dont. I'll have to weld a normal t3 inlet to the turbine and a normal 4 bolt outlet. Should have bought a holset :x

just use it so it points up? then run a 90* off it lol .. stupid backwards turbos .. or get a sidewinder style manifold ..

Once the engine gets in the bay i'll figure it out. Might have to do the sidewinder like efeezi did in his race car :lol:

Got bored earlier today so i decide to mess with the combustion chamber a little bit. It will probably drop the compression .2-.4 ...........Not finished yet.

Cylinder head is on and timing components. This is the first time i've had to time a dohc engine so you guys let me know if its off a tooth. I lined up the colored chain links with the punch marks on the sprockets so hopefully she is where she needs to be. I rotated it over by hand so i know the valves dont hit but, i dont have to be off 1 tooth and be missing out of power. I should have the engine completed by the end of this holiday weekend.

I will be sending you pm once i get my MS1 built for a base map since you have already squirted you ka. Building and wiring the ecu doesn't bother me much but, after opening mega tune and seeing all the variables you need to put in it had be feeling a bit intimadated.

Engine is complete. I hope to have it in the car either this weekend or next. I still need to pickup pressure plate bolts, bell housing bolts, and a pilot bushing.

i feel ur building love. sorry to hear about that raw deal. engine looks great. i cant wait to pullmy sohc and build her. sick of playing with 1.8L's for a while lol
going fast, i can do that... this going sideways thing is tricky.....

thats a nice lookin distributer you got there =)

btw.. I got my project car running damn good today. nomore dying at stop signs and bogging when I hit the throttle.

my fix? removed iacv/aac/aav, different maf

drove it 20 miles to the place im living for the moment.

you have no idea....that a million dollar distributor right there. Glad you got a running car now. Just be easy on her till spring. Nothing worse than having to work on a car in the cold.
