FMIC install
Was running around non intercooled for a long time, finally got er dun. Still have a lot more cleanup and motor work to do, but its moving along somewhat. Its nice to feel the extra power from cold air and extra timing!

Love the DIY in this. Keep it up.

Thanks guys, DIY isnt always pretty... The intercooler pipes are actually made out of my old intercoolerless intake, recycled and wire wheeled. The blow off valve (DSM) recirculation fitting on the intake is mig welded on without gas lol Lots of little things, but its progressing forward slowly.
The hot side intercooler bend looks bad to me, so i might cut the pipe and use a 90* but its fine for now. I have a friend that welds for me for cheap, so i only get small windows for welding.

Its all good that is why I say that. It may not be pretty, but it works and gives cars a run for their money.

To each their own. Granted a clean bay is nice but it's more about performance for me. It is like in 2000 when F&F first came out, all show no good. Like he said, pushing the barrier with cheap and fast. Gotta love it.street_240sx wrote:time to start cleaning up that bay. ouch but progress tho
Who Tig'd the BOV neck? That one is nice. Better than what I would do. I haven't even touched a Tig yet. One day...

Yeah im glad you see it my way supa, im worried about how it runs \ how fast it is, not how it looks.
A lot of car and non-car people seem to get stuck on how it looks, and that the whole thing is slow and about to fall apart.. thats fine with me. lol I can see its easy to do, since probably 80% of the setups you see are clean and shiny.
It works out to my advantage, so i dont care, just think its funny.
Its actually MIG... The guy is really good, but it was windy for 90% of the welds... had to move to the back of the garage to not blow the gas away.
The pipes are exhaust pipe from an older chevy truck at the junkyard lol Intercooler was 40, BOV was free from a friend. I try to find deals.
Everything fits in there really tight without touching or rubbing.. it doesnt look like it though.

This is the pic I am talking about. The other are clearly mig. If the other welds came out like this, it would have been clean.

Yes sir that one is mig also, done on the same miller machine, by the same guy. It was getting windier at the end of the day so we moved to the back of the garage to actually be able to weld, then the welds came out like that. Im guessing he was tapping the trigger since it looks tig, but im not 100% sure.. I can ask if that is what you are talking about. He doesnt own a TIG, and i was there, so i know it was a mig haha
He knows i dont give a crap as long as it will seal. I still have yet to boost leak test though. I dont want him to spend all day making them look pretty either. Im just thankful he welds for free. He figures everything out. I just provide pizza, materials and do all the prep work.
I might invest in some flat black wrinkle finish paint and grind some of the welds down a little, but its really not high on my list. I did wire wheel everything in preparation.
Ive been saving a little $$ for MS3, so hopefully ill get that and be able to redo all
the wiring as well.

short video, 7PSI i will get a good freeway pull on video once im out of town. Hopefully the camera work will be a little steadier

Yea he pulse welded. I can see where the wire left an imprint.

well no dissing on just the fact that its not pretty. but the fact that sh!t gets messed up that way. tangled or shorts, makes tracing issues hard. i agree function> form, thats way my cars are prettiest but usually run better and stronger

To furthermore explain, if you run pipe and you have to pull/push into a coupler and hold it until you tighten the clamp, you already have a pre-load pressure on the pipe to seperate. Proper design is key. If you have a troublesome coupler, there is an issue but there is always a fix.

if you spent 2 hours cleaning up the bay and grinded the welds then wrinkle black painted the charge piping it wouldn't be as much of an eyesore. Guess if you're happy with it that's good though. You might want to upgrade your cooling system soon too with no fan and airflow being partly blocked by the fmic.

Good eye... I see a bit of richness when shifting (bov reversion im guessing) So it def. seems needed. ll redo the intake some day, ive been meaning to figure out a decent way.
I do have an electric fan, its tucked between the pulleys and the motor.

Learn, soon you will.. Even if you have a perfect fit, you will blow couplers off. Maybe not at 10 psi or below but it will happen with worm drive clamps. at least get some constant torque worn drive clamps.
I am amazed that you don't have running issues, I know you have leaks in all those welds.. I'm not picking on you, I just think its funny that some people put tons of money into their projects and it never runs right, yet you have leaky piping and worm drive clamps and you are driving around. For that I give you props

I have and do put a lot of time into making it run right, but its never ran perfectly since i ditched the stock E. Ill boost leak test everything and fix before painting. Im sure the cancer growing on my intake pipe is leaking as well.
Makes sense about the couplers blowing off, i figured the tbolts were overkill for 99% of the setups. I wouldnt mind getting decent T bolt clamps now that i actually can run some decent boost.
Its funny, almost all of the turbo nissan trucks i have found online have been non intercooled junkyard recycled budget builds like mine.. Maybe its truck genetics? Stock leaf springs can be scary with boost in the corners.
Get me some paper clips, duct tape, and an avocado and ill run 50psi on a bone stock 240sx

This is a solution I would do if having issues. Of course, I would fab my own.

shelled out 8 bucks on some VHT wrinkle paint. Came out well, except they got knocked over while drying, im not too worried about it. I will be figuring out a new intake, that will get the same wrinkle treatment.
Headlight upgrade time too.. hella housings and H4 bulbs.. i got 55/100w and 90/130s 3 of each so i have a spare
Bedliner action.. kind of a test patch, kind of just screwing around
