Re: S14wayz 98 LE 500whp+ Build
For the calipers I cleaned them in soap and hot water first , then coated them in aircraft paint stripper and that took all the paint off, then ran it on the wire wheel along with an angle die grinder for the tight spots. That was it really I haven't gone and polished it but if I were to polish it id run a bunch of aluminum polish compounds on a felt wheel. If you you tube polishing aluminum there's tons of great videos for how to. Aluminum doesn't rust so no need to electrolysis aluminum parts.s14fiend wrote:I noticed you said the electro system is not good for aluminum. What did you use to clean the aluminum calipers?

Anyone have any suggestion for ring gap? Wiseco pistons 89.5mm bore. I got them gapped at 0.022 for bottom and 0.018 for top

ya sounds like that's the range people are setting them at. The FSM has a pretty big range for the gap so better to gap em too much then too little!

Re: S14wayz 98 LE 500whp+ Build
weird that the bottom ring was pre gapped at 22 because if you calculate through the sheet they provide you'll come up with numbers for street/high performance in the 0.019" range :S

Issue with quality control from eBay. We ran into this issue with rings on my bro's b16. 3 top rings were off and 4 second rings were off. Bought a new set from a local supplier and we had to file away for all rings.

Thats a lot of filing lol. Luckily there not out of spec im going to run 19 and 22 should be good. Going to mic everything out if I get some time soon and get all the bearing clearnces perfect. Gonna spend a lot of time making sure everyhings perfect. Did any of you guys have excessive bearing crush / out of round on the main bearings? I need to make sure I dont need a line bore. Just spec everything out with a dial bore gauge and mic ? Ill rechexk evrything with plasti gauge clearance wise.supakat wrote:Issue with quality control from eBay. So blocks back from the machine shop. Just to sum up what has been done : Bored over 0.020" and honed, hot tanked and magnafluxed, block decked with front timing cover, crankshaft polished, new freeze plugs and whole rotating assembly balance.

Re: S14wayz 98 LE 500whp+ Build
Thanks guys . So I got a small issue that I'm uncertain of and need some input. I plasti gauged the oil clearances just to see where there at approximately. Im going to spec everything out with a mic and dial bore pretty soon though. Anyways when I went to remove the plasti gauge from the main bearings I used a bit of carb cleaner on a rag and the coating that Clevite puts on the bearing just came right off. Considering how easily it came off I guess its not all that big a deal but when I go to measure everything out I feel that some that are coated and some that are not are going to throw off my measurements. Let me know what you guys think They all read out about 0.001in so I guess there a bit tight.

Thats a nice gun out of my league lol.clean car and nice build you got going, when you plasti gauged the mains did you do the thrust bearing to make sure it was good cause clevites std main set has an oversized thrust bearing unless they changed them, I stopped using them a few years ago after my first set so I'm not up to date on them.
New turbo setup build in progress-11mm headstuds/cometic head gasket/jwt cam gears added,prec. 6266,gato mani,prec.46mm wg,bigger fmic,mspnp2,z32 trans,spec twin,q45 rear,full energy bushings. Still need injectors,and a few other small things

Re: S14wayz 98 LE 500whp+ Build
yeah I actually havent checked the thrust bearing but thats some good info. Im getting a good set of starett mics and telescoping gauges for my bday so I'm going to be making sure everything is perfect down there! Seems like Im going to have to get different sized bearings though .. the clearances according to the plasti are tighter then I want.arob987 wrote:Thats a nice gun out of my league lol.clean car and nice build you got going, when you plasti gauged the mains did you do the thrust bearing to make sure it was good cause clevites std main set has an oversized thrust bearing unless they changed them, I stopped using them a few years ago after my first set so I'm not up to date on them.
Thanks dude, yes I'm really impressed at the quality cant wait to put it to workJmoore124 wrote:Wow nice Devilbiss. I have a few of their older guns and they make excellent stuff. Good luck on the build.

Yea definatly check that I'm thinking it may be to tight if the others are already on the tight side,it would suck to lose a fresh built engine cause of it.S14wayz wrote:yeah I actually havent checked the thrust bearing but thats some good info.
