Hello my first S chassis. (Advan) Build thread

Post by kpjo4 »

Hello my name is Joseph aKa Advan from Central Texas, this is my first 240sx ever and this thread will be my build thread. I bought this car yesterday and trailered it to my friend's shop so I will only be working on this car while the shop is open and when I'm there. I'm looking forward to the S chassis world and I know I'm going to enjoy it. (It will be a drift build and I'm departing away from my e36 drift project for this, simply because I have many friends that are intensively knowledgeable about 240s and drift builds, aKa the "StreetWorks" team.)

November 05 2013
I just bought this car in this condition, a base 89 s13 with a knocking ka24e for $800. Body is about 8/10, really no dings but the paint was bad (at least it was all one color lol)

And this is the last picture when we dropped it off at the shop.

The motor was pulled out with the help of my friend JR aKa iJesta.

And a little over a hr later, the single cam was out.

I didn't do too much today;
First thing I did today was pull out the tank and drain the fuel that has been sitting in it for 3 yrs, smelled like a junkyard
Image
and I never saw a fueltank with the inside this dirty. 240 life lol
Image

Also pulled a high flow walbro 255lph fuel pump out of my turbo civic and fitted some lines to fit on the connectors.
Image

I will be reusing the 1989 240sx oe motor mounts lol, they were in decent condition but I felt like I needed something way stiffer, so I filled them with polyurethane.
Look how dirty these 89 mounts are
Image
Decided they need a good cleaning so I put them into the blast cabinet. They came out looking pretty good and you wouldn't even be able to tell they came from a model year 89 car.
Image
And here they are with them filled, I later smoothed them out and pressed them in more.
Image

Last thing I did today was fiddle with the bay, there was so much dirt and dust everywhere, so I power washed it and degreased it down to prep it for some new paint and drilled out all the unnecessary bracket/mounts.

Here it is today after the motor was pulled out yesterday. Image
And cleaned the infamous steering rack and motor mount area where there usually is carbo/oil buildup.
Image
Lastly I ended up me day with this, a powerwashed and degreased engine bay.

So today I tackled removing all of the firewall units so I could spray the bay.

Here was the bay with a clean firewall and ready for paint.
Image

First two coats of the paint.
Image

A closeup of the driver side fender strut tower area.
Image

Before the clear, taped up the firewall with some heat reflector. (adds chracter lol)
Image

And this was the finishing outcome after we clear coated it. Funny that the paint dulled out, I was hoping for it to become even more shiny =[.
Image

And that was all that was done for the day, it's sitting over night for the clear to cure. Hopefully some real work can be done tomorrow.

The aluminum paint is cool for a minute but the texture of the stuff lends itself to trapping every dirt and dust particle known to man. It ends up looking grungy after a short while. I know this because I am cutreny in the process of painting over it!

Maybe try a clear coat over it. The color/effect is super cool. Just gets dirty and is impossible to clean.

That is why I opted to paint my bay black. Looks good though just hard to keep clean.

November 11 2013 (yesterday)

Yesterday I got my powerplant and extra stuff from a friend, a great homie hookup deal.
Here is what I got from him, two ka24de motors, an isis bottom mount manifold, sr t25 s13 blacktop turbo, 6puck clutch, ka-t rom tune, 370cc sr injectors, and a lot of other ka24de parts. The parts were pretty much apart, so I had to do a mild motor rebuild.

Here is a pic of the parts
Image

November 12 2013 (today)

So today I started building one of the ka24de motors to drop into the car.
Image

Here is the turbo manifold and turbo bolted up to the block.
Image

So the head I used was from a s14 ka, mated to a s13 block, apparently I ran into a timing chain problem. The upper portion of the timing chain that connects to the camshafts. The bolt was from a s13 ka24de head and it was too short so I had to go around the shop and get another bolt with the same pitch and thread, which apparently I also discovered is not common. Found one but the bolt was too long so I had to cut it down. The bolt on the left was the one I found and fabricated, used white paint to markup the cut location, the right bolt is the factory s13 dohc bolt. First pic is before cut and second pic is cut.
Image
Image

Got both the manifolds and the timing chains finished.
Image

And that's all I got accomplished today.

Currently a redline with this setup, I also have a t3 manifold and t3 turbo that I'll probably get a jim wolf for.

November 13 2013 (today)

Added the oil drain line tapped into the sump, and had to weld a custom oil feed line to the turbocharger; I couldn't get the t25 metric fitting to convert to an AN fitting so just welded the factory t25 oil feed line to the one I was going to use.

November 19 2013

Decided to powerwash the under body of the car.
These 2 pictures are before the blast (which wasn't too bad).
Image
Image

and these picture are after the power wash (pics don't do enough justice)
Image
Image

My Isis sr20 downpipe came in too, so I bolted that up real quick.
Image

The welds actually had a nice beading to them so I just took a pic of that lol.
Image

Here it is bolted up, sr20 downpipe on ka24 WHAT WHAT!!
Image

After all that I started on the IC piping, here is the first welded part on the elbow.
Image

Sadly I forgot to take more pics during the whole, welding, cutting, measuring, and bending process, but this is the outcome.
Image

Tomorrow I need to replace both the brake master and clutch master cylinder because the rubber inside them dry rotted and fluid just started leaking =[.
