Torquefreaks ka-t build

Post by torquefreaks »

1993 240sx base model no abs or hicas. No carpet or trim behind the rear seats. Started of with a rebuilt s14 ka and 600$ ebay turbo kit. Bought DIYPNP j64 megasquirt kit and got it running on that and started noob tuning it. Long story short, to much timing and blew the ring landings off on cyl #3 60psi compression remained. Now onto my new setup, first time building a short block FOR MYSELF haha.

87.5mm wiesco pistons 9.1
k1 h beam rods
arp head studs
96lb delphi inj
vw cop
diypnp
hx40
full race mani

clutch suggestions please?

I second the white bunny setup! extrmely reasonably priced and best bang for the buck in my opinion.

Do you have all those components already or is that your wish list of parts?

Stock bore size is 89 mm. I'm assuming you meant 89.5 mm.

howdy. good stuff. just wanted to add that Holset very specifically calls out the maximum allowable rotation of the CHRA which you have exceeded. i dont know what it is off hand but it might be worth getting your feed/drain holes more perpendicular. it may also just be an over precaution. interested to see how this thing spools on your car. ive got a lil ole hy35.

I did to check the timing with a timing light on the initial megasquirt start up.

Might also want to consider some cams as well. Either Kelford 272s or something in that range.

As for the clutch, I'd suggest going with an RB25 flywheel and 350z clutch. It's not as expensive, but you can get a stage 3 350z clutch that supports over 500tq easily.

Yea I am getting pretty stoked! I have been following your build for years and it gave me a lot of motivation to do this. Also digging the Swedish ka-t as well as many other but those two definitely stick out to me. I am very interesting in learning more about this "corn" but any fuel like that has to be ordered by the drum on this small island. What exactly are you running when you refer to corn?

E85. They call it corn because it's ethanol made from corn. Most guys don't run it unless there's a pump station around them somewhere, but it hold lots of potential. I really like how clean your setup is. I wish that I had the time and place to do the same thing, but unfortunately I have had to make things work where I'm at. Keep the updates coming!

So its just the new flex fuel all the new vehicles are calling for? I wish we had one of those pumps around here!

Yes, flex fuel is e85/corn. If they make e85 from sugarcane, I will start to call it rum because that is what it is. E85 is mash with gas added to it. You can make ethanol but need to denaturalize it by 2%. Basically not make it digestible.

I'd like to be able to run E85 one of these days. I'll probably switch to MSPNP at that time though.

You should consider the universal ms2 or even ms3 over the PNP. I was originally concerned about all the wiring but I wish now that I just went with the ms2 from the beginning. I sold the diypnp last week and just ordered the ms2 with map daddy.

Thanks supa I will take a look this evening!

Higher boost regions are not fine tuned. Probably up to 25psi it is smooth. I think I have a drastic spot around 6k around 25psi. It dumps fuel really quick. I haven't looked into to this yet to see what is the cause. Possible fuel starvation I believe.

Hey man, build looks great :) What is your water/meth setup like? I'm interested in doing my own.

Ooh also on your K1 rods, how did you torque the caps?

The water/meth setup up is just the aem kit for boosted engines it has its own controller, pump, tank, alarm led and tube with injector with 3 different options for nozzle size.

For the rods I think it was either 45 or 55 ftlbs and 55 degrees additional I will have to verify when I get home.

I think for the timing map I will try and find a stock ignition map and then retard 1 degree per psi

I bet you 1 degree per psi is plenty modest - give 0.75 degrees per psi a shot. I ran close to 0.5 degrees on my old setup with 93 octane.

And cool, those are pretty easy to come across. And good, I'm glad you used the angle method :) I think I did mine to 30ft-lb + 55°.
