600+ or Bust....Project KA24E(T) Dyno Results!!!!

Post by KA24ETZTM »

So if you have been on ka-t for any extended amount of time you have surely stumbled upon my SOHC build. At least I hope you have. I started this project back in 2008 with the intent to make one of the sickest SOHC KA's on the street today. In my opinion I accomplished that. This build has been one of the biggest learning tools in the realm of cars I have ever had. What works, what doesnt, and it still teaches me. Over the past year I have spent a lot of my time ironing out small issues with the car, but as of late Ive been plagued with some very obvious problems as I am pushing 500 whp out of this engine. Everything from fueling, to clutch, to turbo.

The other week I headed to FL2K14 for the first time determined to run the event, but to my demise my Precision SC61 had a bearing failure and left me unable to compete. I also started having trans issues where my clutch began to hit the starter on my Xcessive Z32 trans kit. All this being addressed is a priority but the number one PITA has been my head lift and head gasket issues. So with all this said there is a plan in place. I have spent a part of 6 years on this car and nearly 25k to solidify this car. I AM NOT GOING TO SELL THIS CAR. It would be a waist of my time and efforts. Here is the newly revised setup.

-Z32 Bell Housing Milled 1/2" to eliminate flywheel spacer and install factory Nissan Starter
-New Turbo Setup, I will never run a Precision again...possible Borg-Warner or Garrett
-Engine is being pulled due to turbo failure and being refreshed along with new revised piston ring gaps
-Block will be machined and cleaned to accept 11mm EVO 625 Age ARP Studs (good for well over 1000hp)
-Cometic head gasket will be replaced with a COSWORTH!
-New drag tires and wheels for the rear.
-Completely New Tune on 93 Pump & C16 by Howard @ RLZ Engineering

THE HOPE IS FOR A 600+ WHP SOHC KA MONSTER TO RUN 10's OR EVEN HIGH 9's!!!!!

I will be posting progress here for more traffic and opinions from DOHC guys as many of them have helped in my learning curve with the SOHC. Until the next update you can view my old build thread here http://www.ka-t.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=35224

Here are some pics of the car....

damn dude, looks awesome. seen your old topic. and it gives me some kinky feeling to do the same to mine after the DE xD ahahahahhaa. go for a bigger ic and bigger piping. trottlebody might get bigger also. for the rest i think injectors and tuning will get you to where you wanna go xD. btw, doesn't the uppipe(downpipe but it's upwards xD) heat the master brake up alot? good luck with the beast ;-)

Door panels look aluminum and are a more practical choice because of weight and ease of fabrication.

That is not a downpipe, it is the wastegate exhaust bypass.

Thanks man I appreciate it...Yea like trackstar said they are aluminum and that is the wastage dump. As far as the intercooler and pipe size goes I will be fine. Its a 4" core and I know plenty of 700hp+ cars with this same setup. Ive made a choice on a turbo. Going with a Comp CT4 6262. 4"inlet 2.5"outlet Billet Wheel/.63ar T3 with 3" vband. Turbo is good for 700+. Ill have some updates soon.

Good choice. I've been very happy with my Comp turbo. Excellent transient response, and spool up time. Plus it's fully serviceable, and they stand behind their work.

Thats one of the reasons I went with it? I will never buy another Precision Turbo as long as I live. Biggest piece of crap ever. I can service and rebuild this one. Plus the price point and a standard billet wheel is nice. How many miles do you have on yours now? You DBB or 360 Journal?

So its been quite a while since Ive been online. Unfortunately after the car went down I just did not have the means to fix it and life happened. In the last couple weeks I have got my hand on some new goodies. I will be buying more parts soon. I also have a question about my VSS signal on my AEM. The last time I ran a wire off the back of the cluster I was able to read signal off the AEM. Unfortunately the cluster would suddenly stop working after about 20mph. The AEM would continue to read. Any ideas on what would cause this. The rest of the cluster continues to work fine.

New goodies....

Borg Warner S362 (good for around 750hp)
Billet Compressor Wheel
62/68
AGP T3 Housing with .63 A/R ( my hope is to have close to the same response as my last turbo but gain a bit more up top with the bigger turbine. The last setup however never struggled. Even with a small A/R the car continued to pull.)

I also was able to get my hands on a Cosworth Head Gasket. This baby was hard to find.

A lot of you guys have requested a video blog...well Ive finally started one. You can watch and subscribe here...https://www.youtube.com/user/ka24etztm Click on the 240sx Build Blog for full video updates. I will be updating my progress and answering questions here as well.

As of now I am renting a storage unit as a shop and have removed the engine this past week. I have my new spare block at the machine shop having time serts installed for the bigger studs. There isn't a lot to see but I did manage to build this pretty sweet workbench to put in the shop. I'll have some updated pics of the engine tear down soon. Enjoy the videos guys. See you soon.

The Single Cam KA24 looks good.... didn't some guy from canada named "glademan" or something be in this car in the past.... regardless car looks good and clean.... cool to know you have gone to one of the yearly meets at FL2K .... I haven't gone since the first year and been on hiatus on the car scene. I like to check up on here time to time to get motivation but regardless free time is scarce as usual.... subscribed to your channel.... props on the youtube channel, build, and being ballzy enough to be different with No F*CKS Given. :handgestures-thumbupright:

As far as Jordan Gladman goes he is a member on here. Not sure what youre asking but he has nothing to do with this build. I built this car from the ground up from day one. I am trying to make FL2K again this year with awesome results. We'll see what happens.

So just a update on this new setup. As always this car continues to teach me. First off I upgraded to wiseco 10.5:1 pistons to bring the compression ratio in the sohc up to 9:1. I upgraded wrist pistons. Also thanks to Omar at O&J Performance for tracking down some king race bearings for the sohc. After some frustration with the 11mm studs I ruined my block from pulling out the time serts. I would not recommend this upgrade, if you can call it that. Just my opinion.

I tracked down a new block and proceeded to vertical mill the holes to RB26 head studs which are 12mmx1.5. Going this big allows for more material in the block for threads. Then of course the Cosworth gasket. I also made a needed adjustment to my chain tensioner which you can watch in my videos. However I am in a bind now. After pulling my z32 trans my synchro springs popped out and destroyed my synchros. After a ton of debate and after fixing the Xcessive trans kits shortcomings I am buying a 98 spec Z32 trans which has upgraded synchros and less issues. Plus my old trans had quite a few miles to begin with. If your interested in any other updates please follow my YouTube Vlog and on instagram @ztuned88. I will continue to update this thread as well. Enjoy this fresh built single slammer.

Dyno Results in the link at the bottom...Been a long time since I posted on here. Wish this forum had as much traffic as the old days. Just wanted to share my results. It's been a long time coming since joining here in 2008. The ole single cam made 500whp @ 20lbs on 93 and 641whp @ 29lbs on Q16. Turbo is a BW S362 SXE. E85 pump is an hour away so not really an option for me. This was on a mustang dyno. The head also has stock ports, NO PORT WORK!!!

Thanks to MRD and Greaser for tuning a bad ass ride. To my knowledge this is the highest horsepower single cam KA 240sx "street" car in the world. I know Ventura made more but its a drag car only and never made a pass except for his Starlet in the late 90's. If you know anyone else let me know.

Planning on hitting the drag strip first of next season. Just bought drag wheels, 5 lug conversion, and Z33 axle conversion. I have a PPG Z32 Dog Box now too so need less to say Im broke for a bit. If I can afford a set of tires and get all that put on before the strip closes I'll make some test passes. You guys follow me on my youtube channel and instagram too. @Ztuned88.

SOOOOOOOO CLEAN, very nice build. You got a PPG Doxbox, you sir are BALLIN' haha. Its really awesome that you had the tune done by MRD/Greaser, definitely look up to that guy and the knowledge he has with KA's and cars in general.

Cant wait to see some videos of her going down the strip and on the street.

Yea I needed someone who could really tune nissans and especially KA's. Nothing but Hondas around here. I trailered it there and was on and off the dyno in one day with two tunes. Greaser is a freaking wizard. He's helped me a lot. I bought that dog box off a buddy for a steal. It had 300 miles on it. Couldnt have afforded full price for one, but he went a different route so it worked out.
