TIG does a higher quality weld but its slow. MIG is fast, puts down a lot of weld and is easy to use. Completely depends what you're doing and how much welding you plan on doing.

it all depends on what your welding. There is options for everything.

Whether your'e going to wire up a 220v or just 115v

what are you going to be welding? Manifolds, intercooler piping, body panels?

Something in the 125-175 amp range usually works for most people.

aluminum or mild steel. If aluminum then you'll need a tig (cheap is the red harbor freight 130a for like $200)

mild steel I'd go with a Lincoln 135 or Miller 135. Migs have much greater uses than just intercooler piping though. Either of these two welders would suffice for what your'e looking for.

I'm pretty sure you can mig aluminum as well. TIG takes quite some time to get good at where as MIG can be learned fairly quick.
