mid-mount intercooler setup?

Post by rusted_s14 »

So, I plan on re-doing my intercooler setup soon, and I really dig the way midmount setups are. Does the shorter piping really improve throttle response and turbine spool? Is it a bigger difference than a regular FMIC setup? If you guys can tell me which core would be best for the mid-mount setup and which would "flow" best and at the same time allow enough air towards the radiator? Any overheating problems with this setup with clutch fan? What bend piping is needed for this setup? Any help and input would be much appreciated!

By mid-mount are you referring to a V mount setup or a Front mount setup?

Basically it's a front mount, but placed directly in front of the radiator and AC cores. Inside the radiator support for better ground clearance and I guess a more "clean" look. Main reason I want to do this is for better ground clearance and just maybe have even better throttle and turbo response.

Thats where I have mine. Drifting loves to eat intercoolers otherwise. It sits right in front of the radiator. I just had to weld on some bends. Hope this helps.

Thats how I have mine setup for now, I ditched the stock fan. If you push the rad back at all make sure to figure out some ducting so your not pulling engine bay heat into the front of the rad. It looks like even sleepy has a small gap to deal with.

Sleepy, love the color scheme man 8)

I am running mid-mount on my S14.... Couldn't love it more!!! i keep my factor bumper... nobody sees the I/C, and when the fans kick on, the draw air through the I/C when Im not moving! It is great!

See my Sig... I will add more pictures if you like just pm me. It actually was bolted below the front radiator support... I cut it out cause I got tired of having to clear it between pulling ka's and rb's in and out all the time. Before I cut it, I just removed the hood latch support and headlight motors and it fit perfectly.

+1 but I doubt it's possible, not enough room. It would have to be a thin IC and a lot of cutting to make the pipes reach there destinations.

i also run a mid mount.... but i tilted my rad back a little and am running a honda 2 core half rad (joys of owning a ca18). never had a heating problem including last week drifting on a 95 degree humid day. and yes my setup (smaller ic and lots shorter piping) netted me almost 200 rpms quicker spool
going fast, i can do that... this going sideways thing is tricky.....

The fabrication work looks top notch... I am curious what the pressure loss is across it with the 90 degree tube into the box end tanks. It would be an interesting thing to measure at the boost/mass flow they would be running.
