Do you ever intend to road race your car Brad?

We are using 1.75" .095 tubing on my road race car. It'll be a 6 point with x brace at the doors and other reinforcements.

Should be done in the next 2 months, will post pics for you afterwards.

I'm doing it to NHRA spec to get me into the 9's if I need to. I'll be happy with low 10's

NHRA specs are cake to deal with compared to SCCA/NASA rules.

What are you guys using for a tubing bender? I've been looking for an affordable entry-level bender. I'm not looking to make my living building rollcages, but I've got two of my own vehicles that will need them, plus it'd be nice to make a few bucks on the side now and then. We tried one of the cheapies from Northern or Harbor Freight (can't remember which one), and it kinked the piping too bad. I saw an episode of Extreme 4x4 or one of those shows on the Spike channel, and they had a manual hydraulic bender that seemed to work good, and I believe they said it was only around $350. Didn't catch where they got it from though.

Notchers are pretty cheap, and I've already got a welder, just need a good tubing bender...

I'll have to ask the fella that is doing ours to see what he uses.

Im personally going to buy a harbor freight pos for making a couple of go karts.=) It'll be thinner tubing so should be a little harder to kink it, either way its only powered by a 5 hp motor anyway. (toys for my nephews)

Good luck with it, I think it probably will work better on smaller tubing. The main problem was the crap mandrels never did really fit right. We tried to modify them to no avail...

pirate's way of bending tube makes it way more complicated than it really is. all you have to do is figure out how far your bender "streches" the tubing and you need to account for that in your measurements. it is no easy task, you will fawk up tubing if you want it to look right. Pro Tools and JD makes great entry level hand benders. not cheap but quality.

one question on those rollcages..
how do you get in and out?...
that would be a back/leg/arm/whatever killer on a dd...

what seems to be a good covering/coating for a daily driven cage setup? what do you guys use/have experiance... i hate the sight of rust and i love preventing it :)

powdercoating seems good, maybe a good appliance paint...

but those would be heavier than no paint at all on the tubing

a better way to bend is to chock a piece up and know very well how it deforms and streches with each degree of bend. also a good set of tools is important. degree wheel, degree finder, pens, grinder, flap disks, chop saw, good welder, etc...

you dont pull them out, they are welded in the car and to the car, you can bolt them to the car but you would still have to cut the bars up to get it out.

if you look at Rick's roll bar you can see how the side bars can be removed (swing-outs) this would make it better for a DD

As for paint you can coat them in anything, i was goint to brush mine and clear coat it for that SS look.

You need a bar like Ricks if you want to go faster than 11.49 at the track, and a cage like Ivans if you want to do better than 9.99

we are going to buy the main loop and then fab the rest up, using a cheap bender i bought a few years ago and never used  . the rest of the bends should be pretty minor, so we think that it will do fine.

could you turn that main hoop into a bolt in roll/harness bar, i really dont want to get crazy with the welder or a massive cage, hence i dont plan on doing any drag racing either

How fast do you want to go? There are bolt in cages but they will not pass tech at the track.

That is expensive, even though it is 4130. If you live near a drag strip check the local roll cage fabricator. They can typically do a nice custom cage for ~$600 - $1000 depending on the complexity and type.

Full Race Manifold=Full Weight Manifold :D
Full Race Roll Cage=Full Price Roll Cage :D

Sorry, couldn't resist. In fairness, I have to give them props on the fab skills
