The Red Hatchling
The Red Hatchling
I'm Yo. I have had a red hatch sitting in my garage forever. I think its time to build it and take it somewhere. I am hoping to get some advice while I build my first motor.
So to start I have an 89 240sx auto that is an almost done 5spd swap. I need a new pilot bearing because I think I ruined the first one I put in. Then I would have a running KAe.
I also picked up a 90 KAe long block for $50. I want to build this and it has a blown HG.
I picked up and almost complete gasket set, its missing oil pan gasket.
When I get the motor on the stand I will post pictures of the tear down.
I hope to get the Hatch running on its stock motor, then put on my tanabe coilovers.
ON the motor.
Keep the stock bottom end as long as everything looks good, put the head back together, and start putting the turbo kit together.

Nice to see another single cam =]
Good luck with the build.

Wow... i thought my manifolds were a bit on the ugly side...
Definately rough, but it looks like it will work.
The only thing I would warn against is running an externally dumped wastegate. I moved my external gate flange to a symetrical location, when its off to the side like that it tends to sound "tractorish". Flow isnt going to be ideal either.
How much was it?

I'm a little late here, but there is no oil pan gasket. RTV all the way.
Turbo? T3/T3. It should just run out of steam at the stock rev limit. Something like this. http://cheapturbo.stores.yahoo.net/gat3su.html

No, you won't be maxing out a t3/t4 at redline. The sohc makes power till about 5.5k rpms and then it falls on its face. It is probably a combination of a **** stock cam, **** intake manifold, and non-ideal port size/design.
Cams really help with this problem and allow a much more usable power band.
But take one step at a time. Turbo it and drive it with the stock cams for a while. It will be a midrange torque monster. Then if you are more power hungry get some cams later on.

If your sig is actually your goal, you may just want a straight T3. A t3/t4 will be making 240whp at 6-7 psi and you will be sacrificing spool to run such a large turbo at that low of a boost level.mookhaasa wrote:IDK what that meant. So I will easily max out a t3?
So t3/t4 .50 trim or somthing?
You might want to concider something like this, its not the cheapest site out there. But shop around, its a great turbo for the power you're looking for. I was hitting 15psi at 2500rpm with this turbo.

An oil pan gasket turns out a bit cleaner if you skip the RTV. I've RTV'd my oil pans but on my last setup I used the cork gasket included with my rebuild kit. Much cleaner and easier to install.wcbjr wrote:I'm a little late here, but there is no oil pan gasket. RTV all the way.
yeah there are cork gaskets, which I have used before.
240whp was just more of a first goal, but If I make more HP at the wheels than 240 I won't complain.
That super 60 seems like a nice option.
So draw back of external wastegate? sounds like a tractor because of turbulent air flow or what?
That super 60 is internally wastegated. If I go with this one then just put a block off plate on the wastegate bung?

Internal is fine for your goals. An external wastegate is not loud if you plumb it back into the downpipe. Even if you don't plumb it back in, it won't open until you are WOT, and who cares at that point. if you buy a turbo with an internally gated exhaust housing, you will either need to weld the flapper to the housing so it wont open or somehow secure the wastegate arm from moving. Either way, you will most likely be welding.mookhaasa wrote:yeah there are cork gaskets, which I have used before.

Ive been Bsing alot and I really need to just at least get my 240sx's running nice.
I got a coupe that kinda seems to run hotish but not really over heat fast or anything. Im thinking the is air getting in the cooling system, so I might try to replace the hoses. Could a timing chain going out cause motor to heat up?
I just picked up another KAe Gasket kit and clutch, I am going to try and do a mini rebuild on the spare KA I have. It blew a HG but it water pump looks fine and there isnt a bunch of crap in the coolant and motor looks pretty good so far. And slap the 5spd on it and throw it in the hatch and get it driving around again and then start collecting turbo setup parts.

Got the timing chain done on the Daily driving Koop. Now that she seems striaght, I am focusing on the Hatchling.
I should have a good look at those Rx-7 injectors on monday.
I have also been slowly taking the Spare KAe apart.
Took off the oil pan to find large black plastic chunks, one of the oil pickup bolts, and about two or three timing chain guide bolts. The pickup had alot of dirt and plant debris on it but wasn't overly gunked up.

Well. Good news. My friend is getting out of S13's for a bit. He is literally giving me all his 240sx stuff. including his relatively clean hatch.
I am taking any and all pieces worth keeping and swapping them to either the daily coupe or the Red hatchling. So it should have a running motor this weekend. Which mean I can drive it, Which means I'll probably want it to drive great. Which mean I can put all the parts I have been stock piling into My hatch.
Also have half a turbo kit now. He brought me a t25 that needs a rebuild but I'm thinking that's way to small for the 2.4 KA.

Which also means if anyone NEEDS a shell. LMK. Straight frame, SOHC, no sunroof, big-ish passenger side dent that I may try to fix for practice. No frame/body rust, except for a little in the spare tire area.
Free or almost free shell in VA beach. Just gotta call it.

*Update.
I got the Red hatchling running pretty good, I think I might throw it back to the Auto ECU.
Also in the mean time I found an HX35 with its wastegate already welded up and a nice sized wastegate.
Here is a pic of it on a NAPZ24 motor I had on the floor.
Here is the same turbo on its former set-up, resting nicely on the BMC.
And the red Hatchling as is

welcome to yet another KAe-t member, glad to finally see people realizing the potential of this motor.
i wonder does a nap-z valve cover fit a s13 KAe?

no it doesn't.
I really need to start planning out a twin scroll top mount for this turbo to spool lower than it can with the side mount log. I may just start out with a basic t3-t4 and go from there and switch to the holset when I can.

Re: The Red Hatchling
So between then and now. I have been working at a craft brewery so my life has been beer. Lately I have been getting back to the s13 life.
The red hatch has an RB20DET. But the coupe is staying KA. I am five speed swapping soon. And just picked up a $50 longblock with low comp in the first cylinder. so I am gonna rebuild it for boost and start figuring out the turbo kit. I got the big stuff. But might just do a small kit and build off of it.
