Anyone have tips on removing the alternator pulley? Belt is still attached with lots of tension; Had my brother hold the water pump pulley with an open ended wrench to stop the belt from moving; Alternator pulley still slips under the belt...

Any tips or suggestions?

BTW, I'm going to weight the OEM vs the sr20 ebay pulleys. So far, there is a huge difference in weight between the power steering pulleys. Like 2-4 LBS! I just don't like the fact that the p/s pulley is slightly smaller.

That is the point of underdrive pullys. Use a bels or chanel locks with a rag, Well you might not care about the old pully but the new one will get malled up quick since its aloy.

Would the SR20 kit fit the dual cam also?

Ebay crank pulley OK? What are you using?

Nathan, In my understanding the pully you posted ^ replaces your harmonic dampener.
I got one for my SOHC crank and took it to the balancer with my flywheel as well.
They balanced all of it together but told me I should use a harmonic balancer since I have so much crank case pressure. I tried it out got rid of the solid motor and trans mounts and enderd up using the stock dampner. I wouln't risk my bottom end with this product.
I dont get bothered by vibration that much but that felt risky to me.

But to answer your question about the other pullys, yes they work with the DE from what I have seen.

I never used the washer, and I reused the OEM nut. The one included sucked.

I also use the oe nut and no washer on the powersteering pully and it has been fine at over 7000 RPM
I hope it fits the DE pump as well.

I can not for the life of me get the damn alternator pulley off with it still attached to the motor. Looks like I'm going to have to remove it and take it to a shop that has an impact.

how and why would u need a hammer??? i cant get it off either with out an impact. there is no way to stop the pully from spinning like the ps pully. when i stop the crank the belt just slides on it aswell.

The autoshop next to my work told me to do it myself.. As in they let me use their impact gun(all free). Map gas, are we welding something here? A pulley puller will not help in loosening the nut holding the pulley in place.

Your best bet is to remove the alternator from the motor and taking it to a shop that has an impact.

I wouldnt bother, it shouldnt be THAT tight. You just need to sacrifice an alt. belt to get it off. Wrap a belt around the pulley, then stick a pipe in the left over belt and twist it up til its tight, then just use a breaker bar on the nut. A wrench + hammer is just as good as an impact.

Also, if you are pulling the alt. just throw the pulley in a vice and use a breaker bar to get the nut off.

Avoid using an impact on the alt, it can damage it.

A few posts up, you guys said that kit works for the DE too? I'd like to get a set if that's the case. I don't have the tools to 'make' them fit if they don't bolt on. Although, I am a bit creative.
I might take a plunge and try it out.

*edit*
Found them on eBay. Gonna try to get a set and give it a shot. See what happens. hah

Do you happen to have a picture of this? Do you twist the belt or pipe? I'm having a hard time picturing this, but, it seems like a tool similar to a bicycle cassette holder.

Its a backyard type trick, dont have any pictures. You basically just twist the belt around the pulley tight enough that it will lock on, then lever the bar against something so it stops the pulley from turning. Kinda like the oil filter wrenches that use the belt.

Tie a 6" bar onto where your 'hand' is on that picture. then twist the bar so it tightens around the alternator pulley. Then hold onto that bar and it gives you leverage to hold on. That should work.
Or if you got room, put a longer bar in there and do it. Or twist it up towards the end of the bar so you have more to hang onto.
I dunno, that's what I would do if I didn't have my air tools. ^_^

Ebay kae with power steering belt grooves milled off for more clearance. Only problem is no timing marks.

Mine came without marks either. I just lined it up with the stock on a spare crank and made marks with a chisel and hammer.
