Possible turbo leak?
Possible turbo leak?
I've searched this topic like crazy but there's too many variables to take in account, so I got a t04e on my ka and I recently took it apart to change a gasket, now I'm not getting any boost! It barely creeps over 0 at almost full throttle and I can hear the bov working so I know it can't be a leak after the compressor, unless I'm wrong? I don't understand what I did wrong, all I did was change a gasket the was causing an exhaust leak but even then I was still hitting boost, is it possible I screwed something up??

Re: Possible turbo leak?
probably a big boost leak, double check all the couplers

I should mention that before I took the turbo off i could hear the turbo spool almost right away and now the exhaust leak is gone but I can't hear any spooling, I checked the shaft for any play and there's barely any at least not enough to be of concern.

Does it spin freely?

Re: Possible turbo leak?
Yes it does, I heard something about the wastegates getting stuck, is that as easy as taking it off and checking it?
Re: Possible turbo leak?
Oh and also forgot to say I have an external wastegate

Re: Possible turbo leak?
Yeah the valves can stick open, esp on the cheaper wastegates.. worth a check. Just pop it off and you should see the valve seated in there. Could you have left the wastegate fire ring off when you took the turbo off? Its the valve seal for the wastegate

Re: Possible turbo leak?
Hmm well I never took off the wastegate and when I fired it up I checked the valve to see if it was opening and it felt like it was seated in there, I imagine I would have felt a gap if it was opening too soon, I revved the engine up a few times and I did feel bursts of heat hitting my hand but I couldn't tell if it was just from the heat of the exhaust
Re: Possible turbo leak?
If I can't hear the turbo spool up when I'm driving, does that mean the leak is before the compressor or after it?
Re: Possible turbo leak?
Why not built a boost leak tester there cheap to build and come in handy.. search google
Re: Possible turbo leak?
Well i found out the problem, the gasket the goes between the turbine and the downpipe was shot so time to rebuild my turbo!!
