GT2871R .86 Setup Dyno results

Post by redpotatoes »

I recently upgraded from a GT2560R to a GT2871R .86.
Went back on the dyno to tune it at 14.5psi.

Previous dyno sheet and setup:
viewtopic.php?t=38014

Current setup:

97 Engine with a 95 intake
GT2871R .86 Turbo (Rebuilt with a ported wastegate)
555cc injectors
N60 Maf
Bottom mount manifold
Turbo elbow
Custom 3" downpipe
3" testpipe
3" BRM exhaust system
Custom 2.5" Intercooler piping
FMIC 28x7x2.5
BKR7E spark plugs
Walbro 255 fuel pump
JGS Vacuum block
Greddy BOV type rs
Greddy Profec-b spec II boost controller
S13 ECU (Almasi tuning)
Fidanza flywheel
Bully performance Stage 4 clutch kit

Dyno session took place on a dynapack 3000 (Disregard the 370cc T28 on top of the graph, it was from my old setup)

And here is my car:

Curves look pretty good, it could use a little more timing in the 5k-5.7k region though. Torque peaks really early, damn 232's :x.

Some bigger cams and a little work on the timing map and i bet you could see 40whp gains at the same boost level.

Looks like a fun setup, hope you are enjoying it.

The boost drop by 1psi in that region and yes the 232's are killing it... I have 248 exhaust cams in the garage but not sure I want to put them in for the moment. It's a stock block. The final run was with 1 degree less than previous and made the same power. I don't even know how it feels on the road yet !

Oh, i'm not used to unsteady boost problems. The single best mod i've ever done since my initial turbo install 3.5-4years ago was switching out my 232s for 272s. Huge power increase up top, i repeat huge!

I'd play it safe on the stock block as well lol. Good luck with your car.

I thought the torque came on kinda late for such a small turbo. I hoped to have a better curve than that with my T28.

.86 make the difference here and with my GT2560R, it was instant boost. Have a look at my previous setup.

Here's my dyno graph with and w/o a boost controller. Same turbo. I had to limit my whp based on the class I run in. Also a few photos from the last event as a bonus.

Numbers are about the same except you have more torque.

Very nice an Original Champaign color. Can you please provide your wheele, offset and tire size. Kudos to the person that took your at speed pics, they did a great job and have nice equipment.

Always loved that car. Its one thing to hit that power, its another to have it hold up to track abuse like that. Sick car, love the front splitter.

I'm at an interesting point of developemnt with the car. The dyno graph above is from the first year, '06, when I first completed the car. Since then I have tuned it to 425 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. I have to maximize the torque because there currently is to no rule for torque and I compete against C5 Z06's and Vipers, which have huge torque across the entire range. I kept blowing head gaskets and finally solved the problem with L19 11mm head studs and O-rings on the block. Well.......I solved the head gasket issue but then cracked the block in multiple locations in between the stud hole and the coolant passage. What to do......

I decided to drop down a few classes and build an NA engine that will make 225 whp and rev reliably to 8K. It has crazy .500" lift cams, Q45 TB, xcessive manifold and a 5 1/2" quarter master clutch. We'll see.

Thanks.

Once I get the NA engine completed I'm going to try and get in Modified mag.

Also I forgot to add above.......the NA engine will run on E85!

Stock block w/ 14.5psi, your ECR should be ~13,46:1 correct me if I'm wrong and isnt that way to high for Pump Gas? Are you running E85?

I have run 14psi stock blocks for a few years. I'm built now, but I still run 15psi on pump gas. It is safe when tuned.

I am running 91 octane, no e85. A good tune make all the difference.

Hmm, I always thought that you couldn't have higher than a 12.5:1 ECR w/o using Race gas, this is good to know Both of you guys are S13's correct?

I have an S13 chassis.

My blocks have been OEM, Frankenstein OEM configurations, and a homebuilt block with CP pistons/Pauter rods. OEM S13 and S14 cams, Crower cams, and Kelford cams.

A lot of the characteristics of what fuel you can run at what boost (dynamic compression ratio) comes from the combustion chamber design. Evos run up to 24psi on pump gas in California.

This is interesting. I would like to upgrade from my GT28R in the future, and thought about going with a higher flowing GT28 such as the 2871R or even higher. I am curious to know if a GT28/30R turbo with a T2 flange and a .86 turbine .A/R reduces backpressure enough at boost levels above 15psi. I am also curious to know if a T28 with the .82 or .86 .A/R would give anywhere near close to the reduction in backpressure that a T3 flanged turbine would give the KA. Basically for the same money, I can either keep my bottom mount and get a higher flowing GT27, or get a nice tubular manifold and a journal bearing T3/T4. Im torn. Thoughts anyone?

T3 or you're wasting your time, unless you have some regulatory limitations like 240sxTTE.

I don't agree with you. It's not a waste of time to have a TXX setup. If I were not on my stock block I would up the boost to 18-20psi and I am sure I would get near 400whp with some decent cams. Not such a waste for a TXX setup isn't it ?

I run a T2 flanged, 3076R .86ar with good results.
Anything over 18psi on the stock internal wastegate would give me insane backpressure. Even melting, and blowing out a copper turbine inlet gasket.
I have since, externally gated the manifold with a 38mm gate. External gate holds 12psi just fine, and I have run upwards of 28psi without blowing out gaskets.
(pics on request)

Don't listen to the people who hate the T2 guys because our turbo's spool faster than theirs.. 8)

Ive been on a 38mm external gate from the jump, I think that I will probably go T3/T4 60 trim with a top mount manifold. The one thing I am wondering is if I go to a topmount T3/T4, what elbow/downpipe options are there? If I use a JGS log manifold, I could use their downpipe and elbow, but what if I wanted to run a Peak Boost tubular top mount or something similar (no ebay top mount)? Just never been too clear on that issue.
DIY or die.
