O&J Cams

Post by tek_88 »

Okay, so I've been looking into cams and found the O&J cams...I was wondering if anyone is using their cams and what's the power band like, hows idle and did you have to mill the cam towers?...with my setup I'm aiming for 350hp and need to know if these cams will help my get their. I was really looking into their stage 2 270 dur and stage 1 mech 280 dur...

I would say the first upgrades anyone should do to the SOHC is:

Step 1- Get pioneer valve springs (like $35)
Step 2- Get solid lifters (O and J sells these)
Step 3- Get the stage 2 mech cam for O and J
Step 4- Set revlimiter at 7,500
Step 5- Beat that Sh1t like it owes you money

I run my idle with the throttle body cracked open with no idle control. So it is idling at about 18:1-25:1 afr. My idle is still pretty decent. Compression is going to be lower with this cam though. But who care, it rips!

Any before/after dyno numbers? Want to see how this affects the power band. Charts would be awesome.

actually I do. I dont have a camera to use right now but I will put in a few facts. You will be very happy.

Stock cam:

3500- 280wtq
4500- 265wtq
5500- 230wtq
6500- 200wtq
7000- 170wtq

3500- 190whp
4500- 240whp
5500- 270whp
6500- 250whp
7000- 225whp

O and J stage 2 mech cam

3500- 265wtq
4500- 320wtq
5500- 320wtq
6500- 275wtq
7000- 245wtq

3500- 170whp
4500- 240whp
5500- 325whp
6500- 335whp
7000- 325whp

Basic facts

-Added about 100whp at 7000rpms
-Added about 90wtq at 5500 rpms
-Meth added 30whp
-turbo added 20whp

So put together added about 50whp and 45wtq and completely changed the powerband from 3000-5000 to 4200-6800

I tryed the stage 2 and 3. He actually modifyed both of the cams cause they had way to much overlap. If you look at his specs for the cams, they are all a little less than they were. I was the test subject... Good and bad. The stage 2 is about the highest I would go unless you are drag racing only. Stage 3 is just far to much for a street car. I could only build about 40-65psi of compression with the old design stage 3. Even with the new stage 2, my compresion is maybe 110. The new one is much better, but stage 2 is the ticket.

SleepyS14, do you think I'll have a problem with my cam? My car will still be on the street ocassionally but she mostly gonna see the strip. I have the old stage 2 mech lifters when it was 290 duration 490 lift. Youve seen my setup, what you think since youve had a little more experience with the cam?

If it is the old stage 2 then it will be fine, just the old stage 3 is a little big to even start the car. Stage 2 cam sucks enough to start the car. Takes about 5-8 times around and 1/4-1/2 throttle to get enough bang to start it. But once its up and running it idles very good (lumpy but good).

BTW. Don't ever check your compression with a stage 2 or 3. Not good, but it doesn't matter cause it rips.

Sleepy,

Thanks for the numbers! You're definitely affecting my cam choice.

What kind of vacuum are you seeing at idle? What kind did you see with the stage 3? Guessing 12in/hg?

Could probably get it to start on the mega squirt with little issue.

I had to take about 10% fuel out everywhere. Makes more power with way less fuel. Tell me if it runs pig ruch with this new cam, I went from 11.7afr to way below 10afr.

I wouldn't even bother getting a aftermarket cam with out solid lifter and stiffer springs. I don't really think it will do much for you. The SOHC needs all the help it can get with head flow. Save your money.

well i found my slow oil consumption issue... ithe the valve stem seels... they are leaking pretty bad. time to take the head off and rip it apart. can't wait to ge tthe cam and have the lopey idle.

sleepys-14: do u have any porting fdone to your head??? im not looking for a ton of poer, more so a fat curve around the 300 rwhp mark (yes im building the internals) was wondering if u had ported at all.

other than that anyone got a sound clip??
going fast, i can do that... this going sideways thing is tricky.....

Got the cam in today. It started right up on the first try and everything but after the car was warm, it idled like stock with stock vacuum. I dont believe the stage 2 mechanical cam should idle this well. Im starting to think i was sent the wrong cam.

You testdrove it yet? I think you are really going to like the change in power delivery. Keep us posted.

You can have alot of duration and still have a very good idle as long is there is no/little valve overlap. I said the same thing when I installed my jwt 272s. It idles with 17" hg vacuum very smoothly.

Then I went for a testdrive and I was smiling as I approached 7500rpms and it was still pulling hard.

I agree with Sleepy-s14, cams are a must in a sohc looking to make decent power.

My cam doesn't idle rough at all either. The only reason mine idles rough is could I have no idle control, so cracked TB and lean A/F=rough idle.

My vacuum is not going to be that you can consider because of the way I am running my setup. But, it is at about 15-16in. My car idles at 1000-1100rpms, lean, and more air, so what ever. You should bump your idle up a bit, to about 800-900rpms and lean it out to about 15-16A/F. Have you tried tuning for boost yet...

Jack you should call up Colt Cams here in town and ask them about a cam. They did the cam for my last setup, they can pretty much do a grind to suit your build. It makes a HUGE difference. Im thinking about adding a cam grind to my setup pretty soon.

Whats your rationing for this? A higher lobe is going to increase valve lift no matter what way you toss it. Springs/solid lifters are going to contribute to higher RPM capability but I've had great experience with cams and the factory valve train.

Im not knocking the solid valve train, its is definately better than the OEM setup but I think a cam will still compliment the OEM valve train conciderably.
