Turbo water return to thermostat housing?

Post by 240sxfan6882 »

I have a n00bish question that I need answering, and I know you guys are the best to ask this.

I want to make my water return line to the thermostat housing by welding a -6an fitting to it. However, I'm worried if I will have any water-backing up issues before the thermostat opens? Once it opens it will have awesome suction to drain the coolant out of the turbo, but if it's closed can it actually backup and boil inside the turbo?

Any feedback will be appreciated like always! Thanks a ton fellas!

that should help ya
I've seen that post before and I didn't really want to run the lines that way because there's not a whole lot of water pressure there for the turbo...although it should work "ok" since a ton are doing it that way.

Thanks for the link.

There's more than enough pressure/flow through the tb loop, I found that out when I didn't have the fittings tight enough lol

YEP, and you don't really even need high pressure to.cool the turbo. Those lines are just a precaution, some people dont even run them. So if you are running lines from anywhere, you will be safe

Yeah I guess your right. I feeding from the block via the 1/4BSP fitting on there. Ill just drain to the returning-heater hose... that should work.

Thanks fellas!

If you use the heater lines it will reduce flow through the heater core, therefore the heat coming out of the heater. It depends on line size. Another downside is that the heater would have less of a cooling effect on the motor which is never good.

The lower radiator hose may be better as a return? Ive never owned a water cooled turbo

Yeah the lower radiator hose IS a better return, and that's why I want to weld a return fitting just ontop of the thermostat housing, which is attach to the bottom return hose! Now you see what I meant. Thing is... with the thermostat closed... will it back up the flow?
