NA KA24DE///

Post by picsbypenny »

A lot of people just do bolt-ons to a KA and say thats all it can take... Then there is us, who slap turbos on it to make easy power.

I was thinking while building up my new motor, that i could rebuild my old motor into some sort of NA beast.

I searched around on nico and zil but no one had made over 170ish wheel.

None of those guys had cams or aftermarket internals.

I was thinking JE 11.1 forged pistons, 264 cams, clevites, arp studs and bolts, cometic headgasket, jwt spr and retain, mild p&P, q45 TB, MS2, and boltons. I think that combo could easily make 200+ wheel reliably... which would be fun in maybe a gutted s13 shell that i have laying around.

It would also make one helluva back up motor for me...

without spending 5k you will not make 200whp in a ka.

I would spend money on balancing it to rev high enough to make 200whp. Just saying its not a bolt on friendly motor

5k is within budget, but I don't see why it would cost that much...my friends motor at 6psi made 270ish, same setup with 264s and a more conservative tune got it to 310ish...

cams + higher compression. probably begging for nitrous too.

All I can say is build that na ka and post the dyno results, those searches revealed the truth, its not happening.

As far as I know robello racing is the only people able to make 200whp(ka24e) outside of corr/scca(very unstreetable and short life)

Ever seen the baja frontiers with the DE? They make some VERY impressive power out of the motor. I say it can be done, but then again I am an Optimist.

11:1 with e85 and cammed seems close to 200hp to me. Im running that setup plus turbo, but based on the hp numbers I made I would say my engine would be very close to 200 without boost.

Seems doable for close to $3000 depending on engine management cost.

I'm not talking out of thin air, in my ten years of ka I have not see a 200whp dyno. Sorry. Link to said video?

The baja/corr/scca guys make like 230hp(possibly crank lol) and rev to 13000 rpms to do so, not mentioning the engine has probably a 2 race lifespan. I think its possible with enough R&D but would spending 3 grand to get 200 be smarter than 3 grand for 300+.

turboholic

pull the turbo stuff and dyno, I've been on 91 hot cams/sohc pistons/bolt ons I dont think it would be over 175 whp. That same setup with a 50 trim t3 at 18psi was insane though.

until I see a dyno

Greaser is the only one I have seen break 200 whp N/A. He made 217whp/191wtq: http://forums.nicoclub.com/greaser-s-22 ... 64467.html

No, that's Greaser's bay. Here are a few cool videos of him having some fun with the car:

Lotsa flames: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfQ4eA626kM

Drift action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkn-0_jLUpU

Greaser is a bit of a legend in the 240 community. He was hitting 10's in the 1/4 in a ~350 whp SR'd S13 coupe when most kids were just learning what a SR swap was.

If you want to learn what really works and what doesn't, you need to research his NA KA build. And if you can get ahold of him via PM or e-mail, he's a very knowledgeable and nice guy. I remember him replying to PMs I sent him when other people were ignoring me as the noob I was... back in 1999-2001. His NA KA was just a slut of a motor that was basically just a test bed for what makes power and what doesn't. He tried tons of different things before he arrived at the final 217whp dyno. His experience will probably save you some time and money if you do pursue this.

P.S. Greaser is a member on here, btw: memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=229

What about this fellow? I chatted with him off and on in the past when building up my '93 Altima. He ran a turbo with big low rpm tq (3-400lbft at or below 3k rpm IIRC) for road racing but then went full NA. He seems to feel the IM and cams are the only thing holding the KA from getting above 170whp NA. FWIW lol....

wow some people have cracked it, albeit not easily or economically. Yes this IM and cams are a big part, but IMHO what allowed that number is the ati damper. The stock crank gets really gnarly after 5500 rpms(the way it was described to me was "trying to rip itself apart").

thats got to be a weird straight line pull with the power coming on and off. Still good work .
