Maxima coils- Bad experience

Post by wannaboost? »

Ok everyone, I just wanted to share my story with the 95-99 Maxima coils for any of you looking into a coil-on-plug setup.

I initially went to the junkyard and got 7 coils (4 for use and 3 spares). Well, after getting my fresh engine started and setup on the dyno, they were giving us trouble at 18ish psi. We swapped 3 of them for my spares and it seemed to be fine and we made 400ish whp at 19psi. I then did a full drift test day at our local lot and it too seemed to be ok.

THEN, going into the first competition of the year, starting from practice, they wouldn't even hold 9 psi. We went to Vatozone and O'reallys and bought 4 new coils to make it through the day, but had no luck. After trying 11 Maxima coils, my tuner comes to the rescue with a set of Honda K series coils. They fit great, pin the same, and worked extremely well. We turned the boost way back up and had a blast that day.

Just thought I'd share my experience with these because they seemed to be such a great, cheap alternative.

I think I had one bad coil and had 4 from a 200k last all yr plus few dyno runs at 665whp I now upgraded to 01 maxi coils that look beefier nicer n of course r newer im hoping to see a larger gap n better results I can tell right off the bat start ups are alot better. thats interesting the k series use the same plug n fit perfect upload some pics I know a guy who made 800whp on his b18 with a .020 gap s2000 coils don'tknow if that's what you have

Yes, K series and S2k are the same. They don't use the same plug as maxima but they are pinned exactly the same. We did find that the plug is nearly the same and would fit with some trimming but I'd suggest just buying K series plugs.

I know this is kind of an "old" topic, but I was wondering.... do the K series coils just drop right into our KA engines? I mean length-wise and with the diameter of their "stem", do they reach the sparkplugs?

I found this pic, but its kind of blurry:

I run the 01 maxima coils at .016 gap 721whp 27psi the 95 are weaker n only made it to 665. I have the 04 3.5 coils I'll be trying next for 32psi that my tuner said are good to upwards of 800whp!!!!
