Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
Thanks for viewing my thread
This will be my first time tackling the KA-T project so any and all advice is welcome. I've had stock KA's, SR20's, and RB25s so this should be a fun time. It will more than likely be a slow build/process, however I will upload the thread with pictures whenever I do get a chance to work on the motor. Picked up my s14 rolling shell (with complete motor) non running about a month and a half ago (10/15/2015).
Picked up up a long block today for $100 and brought it home. Owner stated it had a water pump failure which caused it to blow the HG; I didn't mind as I will be rebuilding the block. My goals for this is going to be 400whp on E85 as my daily driver. Hope to have a dual tune for 91 & E85 as 91 is the highest here in Socal, besides the E85, however it's not always the easiest to get. Luckily for me I have 2 E85 stations both within 5 miles from me so I shouldn't have a problem, it's when I travel in the car it may become an issue.
I will also be doing an Auto to Manual conversion.
Parts I plan on using for the build:
- Clevite main & rod bearings
- Wiseco 9.0:1 90mm pistons
- Eagle H-Beam connecting Rods
- Felpro engine gasket set
- OSK Timing chain kit
- OEM Nissan oil pump rebuild w/ rebuilt regulator
- OEM Nissan water pump
- 97' KA 5speed Tranny
- XTD RB flywheel
- ACT RB HD street clutch kit
- JGS Rubber motor mounts
- JGS Rubber tranny mount
- Aluminum radiator
- PeakBoost top mount manifold
- Holset HY35
I plan on going the stand alone route as far as engine management goes, however if I end up not being able to fit it in the budget I'll more than likely go Nistune/Nismotronic.
HAPPY BUILDING!
***NOTE*** Make sure you ALWAYS label your baggies so you know which nuts/bolts go to what.
Scrapping away the silicone gasket with a blade.

Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
Good plan! This was where my head was at when I first started my turbo KA build. Are you pulling everything apart for inspection or just hoping for the best? For safety Id have the crank inspected/polished/balanced, and check the head/cylinder walls for any severe scoring. Last thing you want is excessive metal collecting in those spots and floating around your motor after you just got done building it.
I vote for a top mount! If you are going to buy one though I recommend the DOC race top mount manifold for the quality of the steel, design characteristics, and fitment. If you want to have one custom fabbed, best to wait until you have the motor in your car for fitment. How much boost do you think you want to run?

Good luck with build. Instead of psi, how much power you want?

Thanks! I will be taking the block and head to the machine shop to be hot tanked, inspected, and possibly have the cylinders honed (if possible without removing too much as I'm planning on std bore 89mm). I will have the head and block resurfaced/decked. I haven't thought about having the crank inspected/done as I am on a budget; would hate to put it all together to find out later the crank is warped.
I think I decide to go top mount! I also do plan on using the doc race manifold as it looks to be the best. The metal looks strong and the welds are fantastic; overall great craftsmanship.

I think you mixed them up ha! I never mentioned psi, only whp. Did you want to know the psi I'm shooting for? If so, probably around 25psi on E85 .supakat wrote:Good luck with build. Instead of psi, how much power you want?

I could be wrong, but I believe that supakat may have been responding to MadMax about the psi/hp comment:Cute240sxGuy wrote:I think you mixed them up ha! I never mentioned psi, only whp. Did you want to know the psi I'm shooting for? If so, probably around 25psi on E85 .

Truu Also, In the OPs original post he says ~400 wheel is the goal on e85 probably.
I was more so asking PSI for manifold suggestions, I know people who get away with low boost on some cheaper manifold options. Granted the fitment, welds, and metal will have a higher % of not being up to par for when you do want to turn up the boost.
I'd sell you my rolling s14 shell, but alas you are a ways away!

I plan on the doc race manifold as it looks comparable to the sheepey one I was using on my genesis.MadMax wrote:Truu Also, In the OPs original post he says ~400 wheel is the goal on e85 probably.

I plan on running around 25psi give or take.
Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
Yea my bad. I did not see his 400whp comment. 25psi to make 400whp is using a smaller turbo which will heat up. Get something good for 550 and you will probably only need to run around 18psi to make that power. At 20psi with my HE351, I am around 420whp if I can remember correctly. This will also give you wiggle room to grow.
This is all theory. To get a good turbo, use a calculator to find how much air you need and find a turbo map that fits this value.

Any turbo recommendations? I was thinking of going with the Precision 5858 w/ ported S compressor housing.

Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
Not much of an update, however I did remove a few of the accessories that were on the block. I was planning on removing the head today but didn't get a chance to pickup the socket sizes that I needed. More than likely tomorrow or this weekend when I've got more free time. Had to replace thermostat and thermostat housing on wifes POS Ford Focus.
SORRY FOR THE CRAPPY PICS. IT WAS DARK IN MY GARAGE AND ALL I HAD WAS MY HEADLIGHTS LOL!

Right on, I'll have to check yours out also. Is there a power goal you have in mind for your build? What head studs will you be using?adamky wrote:You're off to a good start. My engine build parts list is almost identical.
Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
Shooting for 350 for right now due to money issues. I'm going to be using the CA625+ EVO9 headstuds from ARP. The goal being that once I get some extra cash, I'll upgrade the fuel system and shoot for 500-600.

Are those the 11mm l19? I'm still trying to wrap my head around which route to go.adamky wrote:Shooting for 350 for right now due to money issues. UPDATE!!!!
Picked up my Clevite main and rod bearings; standard size. Brand new never used for $70!!
Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
They are 11 mm, but the material is called CA625+ and it is stronger than L19 and the material is more stable. L19 has some weird properties where even a little oil from your skin can cause lots of corrosion.

Right on man thanks for the info, I'm going to look into these. Any drilling/taping involved?adamky wrote:They are 11 mm, but the material is called CA625+ and it is stronger than L19 and the material is more stable. Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
Yes, time serts are necessary in the block. You can use 11mm without any mods to the head though. 12mm requires drilling out the holes in the head as well as drilling/tapping the block. There's an oil galley that has to be modified as well.

Perfect thank you for the answer. Sorry for the noob questions lol.adamky wrote:Yes, time serts are necessary in the block. Didn't really factor in having to rethread the block for upgraded head studs, should do more homework. Was planning on just running the 10mm ARP KA24de studs with cometic MHG shooting for around 25-30psi. I want to do it right the first time, so timeserts and 11mm will be up there on my check list.

If your machinist is good you can get away without having to timecert the block for 11mm. I was able to.adamky wrote:Yes, time serts are necessary in the block. Granted I might have pull out issues with ultra high boost, but well see when we get there.
Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
Really? The fact that the thread pitch is different would worry me, but that's good to know that it can be done.
Anyways, the machine shop that I use takes forever to get work done, and I already have my head there. When I had my bottom end machined and assembled 3 years ago, it took them 3 months to get it back to me. I don't want to wait on the block too, so I'm going to use this DIY kit that BoBaCK1 used for his build" viewtopic.php?f=3&t=60928&p=517811=#p517811

Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
So today I looked at and purchased my s14 rolling shell ! It has motor and transmission however the block is toast. Probably going to try and pull the head tomorrow off of it and really inspect it. May use the head from this s14 KA if it's better than the one I currently have. Will keep you guys updated.
Re: Cute240sxGuy's KA24DET Build - 91/E85
Doing it right! Your parts list is very similar to my own too. Its such a great idea to check everything out ahead of time while the engine is out- so much easier to work on. Looking forward to see what you come up with for this build
As for standalone ECUs, I know its prob not a priority at the moment, but have you checked out some of the newer standalone ECUs that have "flex-fuel" support?

I have and not sure which one I want to go with. Currently I run a haltech on my genesis coupe with continental flex fuel sensor; running a dual 91/E85 tune.cleantune wrote:Doing it right! Will also be doing a 5 speed swap to my car as it's an automatic! Picked up a 97' KA 5speed Transmission. I don't have $1k to fork out just for a z32 tranny mount KIT, plus the z32 tranny, PLUS clutch/flywheel kit. So, with my power goals, I'm hoping it'll last me a while before It blows lol (if it does).
