I had considered JB weld when I was trying to figure out what to use, but I wasn't sure if it was a good electrical insulator.

PHR is sending me another connector. The guy on the phone told me not to epoxy it. I said that 2 wires broke off and that's why I did it, but he didn't seem phased by that. Caswell Plating makes some 2 part epoxy fuel tank sealer and I know it holds up to ethanol and is fine to use on wires. It's just expensive.

Greaser, this one's for you. Figured I'll give it a try and see how I like it:

Cams as installed in stock positions:
@ .001" of lift
Intake Opens BTDC (ATDC is -) : 17
Intake Closes ABDC : 85
Exhaust Opens BBDC : 79
Exhaust Closes ATDC (BTDC is -) : 28

When I plug those numbers into http://www.wallaceracing.com/camcalc.php, this is what it spits out:
Intake Duration is 282.00 degrees.
Exhaust Duration is 287.00 degrees.
Installed Intake Centerline is 124.00 degrees ATDC.
Installed Exhaust Centerline is 115.50 degrees BTDC.
LSA is 119.8 degrees
Overlap is 45.00 degrees.

@ .050" of lift
Intake Opens BTDC (ATDC is -) : -17
Intake Closes ABDC : 53
Exhaust Opens BBDC : 46
Exhaust Closes ATDC (BTDC is -) : -9

Results from plugging them into the calculator:
Intake Duration is 216.00 degrees.
Exhaust Duration is 217.00 degrees.
Installed Intake Centerline is 125.00 degrees ATDC.
Installed Exhaust Centerline is 117.50 degrees BTDC.
LSA is 121.3 degrees
Overlap is -26.00 degrees.

And with intake @ 10* max advance and exhaust @ 10* max retard:
@ .001" of lift
Intake Opens BTDC (ATDC is -) : 28
Intake Closes ABDC : 76
Exhaust Opens BBDC : 68
Exhaust Closes ATDC (BTDC is -) : 39

When I plug those numbers into http://www.wallaceracing.com/camcalc.php, this is what it spits out:
Intake Duration is 284.00 degrees.
Exhaust Duration is 287.00 degrees.
Installed Intake Centerline is 114.00 degrees ATDC.
Installed Exhaust Centerline is 104.50 degrees BTDC.
LSA is 109.3 degrees
Overlap is 67.00 degrees.

________________________________________________________________________________________

@ .050” of lift
Intake Opens BTDC (ATDC is -) : -7
Intake Closes ABDC : 40
Exhaust Opens BBDC : 34
Exhaust Closes ATDC (BTDC is -) : 2

Results from plugging them into the calculator:
Intake Duration is 213.00 degrees.
Exhaust Duration is 216.00 degrees.
Installed Intake Centerline is 113.50 degrees ATDC.
Installed Exhaust Centerline is 106.00 degrees BTDC.
LSA is 109.8 degrees
Overlap is -5.00 degrees.

Also added 2 NPT plugs to the upper cover to allow me to adjust tension without having to remove it. This will make it a whole lot easier if I decide to change them back at some point.

Upgraded to much brighter LEDs for the gauge cluster. Had to add a little tint to the ethanol % gauge because it was too bright, but it looks fine now.

Replacement fuel hat connector from PHR. Encased in Caswell's fuel tank epoxy (on the left). I've got some test pieces in my fuel jars for testing and the Caswell is holding up very well. The original epoxy from the hardware store is now very gel-like.
Fuel tank is back in the car, lines have been run to the front. The rear subframe is back in now with new Energy Suspension subframe and diff bushings. I somehow neglected to take pictures of that.

(The third line is for the PCV setup)

Block and head are together, cams are timed, front covers and Xcessive upper oil pan are on. So, the motor just need the clutch installed on to it, and then the motor can go back in the car. Hoping to have it ready to start up by next weekend.

Here's the spec sheet for the new tomei head gaskets that just came out. Looks like they use a folded stopper layer just like the discontinued cosworth gaskets.

If your car is real low, I'd be concerned and would probably get a skid plate or get some mounts that will raise the motor up a little. The Xcessive mounts that I had raised the motor around 3/4". At that point, the sway bar is right at (or maybe even a little below) the bottom of the pan. Also keep in mind that there are probably sumps that don't sit down so low, such as the Moroso. The cooling fins and it's cast aluminum construction are what make the Greddy and ISIS pans sit so low. A steel sheet metal pan would probably have more clearance (although I haven't tested any others to confirm this myself).

Either way, I would cut off the rear trans flange as I did. That flange blocks access to the two rear oil pan bolts and makes it literally impossible to remove the pan without first pulling the trans out of the car.

I've also modified the little trap doors in my sump to make them much more functional. I made newer doors that fit better and added some counterweights that allow them to move very freely and easily. I'll post up some pics when I'm done with it.

I finished modifying the trap doors tonight and filled it with oil to do a little testing. I'm happy to report that they work exactly like I wanted them to.
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7S8Xi3ZpWs (You'll have to excuse my excitement over a couple of hinged doors :D)

I hope that these mods along with the lowered pickup will go a long way toward reducing the chance of oil starvation and spun bearings like last time.

Turbo is mounted. Exhaust side is all connected except for the downpipe to exhaust junction.

I've installed most of my big fuel setup. However, in order to get the motor broke in, I bought some 5/16" hose barb adapters so I can run my side feed fuel rail and 740cc injectors. Once the motor is broke in, I can just swap out the barbs for the proper AN fittings and install my top feed fuel rail and 1600cc Bosch injectors.

My car isnt that low right now but i plan on going a little lower. I dont have a sway bar right now, waiting on a gktech one. I drift my car so if i go over a curb i dont want to hit the pan.

WOW you've been busy! Making me feel lazy haha. I really like that external tensioner idea. I'd be cool if someone made a clear cover or maybe a two-piece valve cover, so the timing chain was visible like some JZ-series engines.

The playdoh was a great idea for the pick up depth measurement. That piece you hand-machined looks like it came out great! Keep up the great work as always!

Thanks man. Very excited to get the car back on the road. I'm using Greaser's mechanical tensioners, so the NPT ports just allow me to access those screws without the need to remove the upper cover itself.

Got everything together yesterday. Disconnected spark and fuel and primed the motor to get oil into the bearings and turbo. Couldn't get any oil through the turbo feed. Disconnected the filter, stuck a bucket under it and went and cranked it some more and came back to see that I was definitely flowing oil to the filter. It just wasn't flowing past the filter.

Turns out that when the new hoses were made to go from the Skullworks oil block to the remote filter housing, the lines got switched. The anti-drain back valve prevents the oil from flowing in reverse.

Here she sits now waiting on me to swap the lines and finish putting her back together.

She runs!
I was able to swap the oil filter lines without having to re-make the hoses with longer/shorter ones. Primed the oiling system before the first start and was able to get oil flow and enough pressure to show up on my gauge. Fired it up and it sounds great, nice and healthy. Ran it for around 20 minutes @ 2000 rpm. Had a little over 60 psi of oil pressure at that rpm when cold. Still had over 40 psi after warmed up.

I've got some air trapped in the cooling system. Can't get the thermostat to open. Last time, I actually disconnected the radiator fan and let it get up to 220* a few times. The fans come on automatically when the temp hits 192, so the fan being on keeps the lower radiator hose and lower part of the radiator from warming up enough to open the thermostat.

I forgot to get a video, but I will get one of it running soon.

Looking good man congrats on getting it running..... clean interior too.

About the cruise control..... I think I want to keep mine too.... keep us updated on that part too (cruise control).

I like the fact that you are keeping functionality of it.... That's where I am stuck now though debating making it a gutted car or an all around steerable car with factory component usability.

Cheers.

5857. I purchased the turbo 5-6 years ago before they changed it to a 5858. What sucks about that is that I can no longer purchase new turbine housings for the 57mm. I'm running a .63 A/R, and if I wanted to switch to a .82, I'd have to find a used one or just be SOL.

Thanks! I hope to test the cruise control next week. And yeah, I gotta have PS and AC. If it was a weekend car, I wouldn't worry about it. But it's going to be my DD for a while.

Thanks man! I made a post about that a few pages back: viewtopic.php?p=531212#p531212

Overall, I much prefer the power delivery of a roots supercharger. I'm so used to boost-on-demand and it's weird punching the throttle and then waiting for boost to build. I'd love to throw a monster roots S/C on a KA some day. I imagine that would make for a very fun car.

My brakes just downright suck right now and are borderline dangerous. Pedal feel is way too stiff and I have to really stand on it full force to lockup the brakes.

Current brakes:
Z32 F&R calipers
Hawk HPS pads
Blank rotors
17/16" Z32 MC

New Brakes:
Z32 Centric F&R slotted, zinc plated rotors
StopTech Sport pads
Centric Z32 1" MC
Calipers painted red (because RACECAR)

I am currently running a 17/16 MC with the stock S14 Manual brake booste and hate the pedal feel. So, I'm hoping the MC change helps with that.

The new MC reservoir had a white plastic top and I hated it. After unsuccessfully dying the plastic black and then a dark red (it turned out pink!), I realized that I may be able to swap reservoirs, so that's what I did.

Nice work as always. The brakes look great! The engine bay is looking nice and clean too.

About the pedal feel- I've read that changing to either a larger brake booster or smaller MC helps. I know you asked me the same question, but I'd also be interested to know what you think about the difference between the two master cylinders. Oh and I misread that comment too, I thought you were talking about going from an OEM 240 MC to a 1" z32...my mistake.

Those LEDs are cool. So do they just install like an HID setup would?
