AutoCon came to the Eastcoast for the first time! So after a proapproval process and registration completion, this event was in the schedule. It was NOT AT ALL an easy process to get there though. With the chassis still at the shop for fabrication work the morning of "drop-off day" at the show, there was a huge rush to get everything ready.
The whole body was dirty and had pineneedles on it, no bumper, no sideskirts and some other missing pieces. Running super behind time-wise, found the organizer's number and notified them that we were on the way with two cars (would've been 3, but that's a different story, hah). Then more traffic and further behind in schedule, but I was able to contact the organizers were kind enough to stay a little longer until we arrived. Some how we got there before they closed the doors to the convention center and now focus shifted toward the rush to get "show-ready" for the next day.

I resprayed the "bash-bar" that night and loaded it up in the transport car the the next morning (had the windows down the whole drive because of the fumes, haha). That morning we rushed in, dusted everything, claybar/deatail spray and waxed everything. The BridgeMoto 6pt digicam harness and license plate was installed and the interior was cleaned up.

Despite the missing body pieces the car was well-received by many at the event.

So THANKFULLY there is a "free" option for Photo bucket again; hoping this "free" option continues. So, as a result, time for some updates everyone!

A friend and I showed up with cars the day before Tuner Evo (TE) and found out there were no more early drop offs that day, so I unloaded the car and drove around the big lots for a bit in an attempt to burn off some excess fuel (for the req 1/4 tank rule). The tune is pretty efficient though, so I was gong to have to siphon the rest out. We drove all the way back home and had a VERY late the night before Tuner Evo Philly. A friend's car had a fuel leak, so I went over to help figure out and help find a solution. Then went back to siphon gas out of the 240 tank in the dark in the back of a trailer (on top of all the other little things that needed to be finished before going). May have gotten 1 hr of sleep, maybe, hah. Did a quick detail once we were in:

If anyone is ever around this area, the show is at the Greater Philadelphia expo center and there is a lot of places in the area to get food and a movie theater; all whith in 5 min drive or less.

There was an autox event on Jefferson Circuit at Summit Point at the end of last year called the "Refrigerator bowl". Its basically a point to point race on the circuit with a cool down section before arriving back at grid. It was a good opportunity to try out some different parts and learn one's own setup a little better. One of the Drift Nirvana coordinators "Rapper Dan" was there along with some other members.
Photos Courtesy of Finishline productions:

It was COLD that day, so warmed up with a 360 haha:

Not too much has changed with the engine setup; just put the oil cooler back in with a partsshopmax oil filter relocation and plumbed in the accusump with an electronic pressure control valve.
Old dyno sheet from R/T:

Had the valve coaver coated by Bonehead Performance and did a few little things to tidy up the appearance of the engine bay for the show that was planned for the end of January:

towards the end of last year (2017), we had partnered up with Automotive Training Center (ATC) to help promote their school and all the great opportunities and variety of classes they have to offer their students:

The show was a great success. We had many opportunities to talk to people at the event; talking about the services ATC provides for their students, educating about products we used on these cars, as well as talking with them about their own builds and plans. Overall it was a great time. The event ended the same day as the superbowl and the weather wasn't too great, but thankfully we managed to get out of the city before the game was over and before temps dropped below freezing.

...oh ya know...things

I'll post updates as stuff changes. I can plan for months to do something and then decide to change it last minute :dunno:

More pics, and again if anyone sees something they like on this engine setup- literally anything (radiator, fans, powersteering pump, etc),
lemme know. Haven't got to block disassembly because I plan to shoot some vid footage for everyone, but planning on doing this soon!

Starting the prep for pulling the engine:
Image

The straps were kinda stretchy, but worked; and before anyone points this out, the strap looped around the downpipe wasn't supporting any weight (just tied it to get it out of the way). Left the shifter on too, so had to reach through the trans tunnel to remove it, lol.

Image

...aaaaaaaand its out! (with some help from some fellow enthusiasts of course)

Started taking pics of individual parts (all for sale) from this setup. Will be starting a fs thread on here with part detail listed.

These pipes are incredibly lightweight; all aluminum:

Currently working on disassembling the bolt ons- someone thought it was a "good" idea to tack weld every bolt holding the turbo onto the manifold; ugh.
Also working on simplifying the mess in the engine bay. I post progress on this much more often on my instagram story (@cleantune). More updates on the Way!

VERY interesting and perplexing finds so far with this engine. Just to preface as to WHY....
This engine has been through some complete rebuilds (full disassembly more than once before) and I was NOT directly involved with the part choice, specs, or final assembly (HUGE mistake, but did this to save time). So far I have found the following with the engine alone....

1. exhaust leak due to the gasket not sealing properly (from nuts that were not tight to spec)

2. BC cams are two different sizes, with the Larger on the intake side (WHY on earth would we take in more air than we can send out?!)

3. I've read BC cams that needed to be machined (cut off distributor end that is used on altima KA) also need to be swapped with the intake cam when using in the 240sx KA motor (can someone please confirm this?!), but clearly the only cam that was machined is STILL on the Exhaust side?!

4. Pics below show that this head is not a 240sx head, but as someone had pointed out to me, it looks to be a Nissan Frontier head. Note the "missing" 11th and 12th cam caps near the rear of the engine. I looked up the speedometer clusters for both and the 240sx cluster appear to redline 1k higher than the Frontier Tach.

Image

Image

Image

Image

...Just at a loss for words right now; if I am overreacting someone please tell me- I'm just trying to wrap my head all this- Everything just is not making sense to me at the moment. My curiousity as to how much better this would have ran with different parts and my direct involvement with the engine build continues to grow stronger with every new layer that is uncovered.

Stay tuned as we dive deeper into the internals!!! :icon-rolleyes:

I think it's your original head - '97-98 240sx / KA24 heads did not have the rearmost cam towers...

You'll need to press the oil plug in further to be sure you maintain oil pressure.

^ thanks Brian, I'll take another look at it.

For those who are not already following my instagram (@cleantune), I have been posting videos and pictures of the engine teardown and hope to have a POV video of the engine disassembly up on yt by the end of the month (I'll post the link here when available). Again EVERYTHING for this engine is for sale "as is" and I'd be happy to send you additional pics or provide more info upon request. FS thread will be posted sometime this month or next.

Currently working on simplifying the wiring and barely resisting the urge to redo ALL of the electrical harnesses and fuse/relay boxes.

Re: New Project: Mild build

Post by cleantune »

WOW, didn't realize how long its been since this thread was updated! Left this thread last time with some what of a "cliff hanger" after mentioning "big changes" are in the works. After the oil starvation incident at Pocono Raceway, I had to figure out what to do with the engine: Rebuild or replace?

I had found a place experienced with building KA motors: http://www.handcraftedracing.com/KA24DEcrate.html

The plan was to simply replace the long block retune and get back to driving! Easy enough, right?!

The KA transmission was making some interesting noises, so I picked up a CD00A during a discount sale (basically a CD009 350z trans, but new code for new year); figured this trans is pretty universal and I had even read of Supra fans starting to go after these due to their durability and less cost than the Getrag transmissions.

The goal was to get back to the track as soon as possible, so the more bolt-on/ drop-in parts were, the better!

We had an extended period of downtime, when another person I went to the track with found some issues with their motor. During this downtime I started contemplating what to do motor-wise.

Through many nights of research, I had narrowed it down to:

1. New rebuilt longblock (KA24de-t)
2. 1UZFE (collins adapters makes a kit and I read some early versions were built with intent to use the motor in race applications, plus readily available)
3. 1JZ (high reving, durable, can easily switch to single turbo without tuning, but parts not readily available in the states)
3. 2JZ (durable, parts readily available in the states)
4. LS (I strongly hesitate to even mention this because of the mixed internet feelingss on this)

....

Then it was: Built KA24de longblock, 2JZ or LS :angry-tappingfoot: (...ya I know)

Considered an SR- would also be pretty drop-in and tunable.

Already had a tuner and Rebuild shop in mind for the KA24de, so to level the playing field a bit, started looking at shops that do full motor rebuilds and tunes for the 2Jz and LS.

Considered just doing an OEM 2jz or LS too. After talking to many people at events and internet/youtube searching, found both were good, but some minor things could be improved (more with LS than the 2JZ).

The goal was a reliable motor that made power and didn't have a lot of moving parts. Part of this goal was also to find a "drop-in package deal" for minimum down time. There are videos out there where these people rev and thrash on their 2J and LS motors and their maintenance for the year is just oil and filter changes. Now, yes, this is a case-by-case type of occurrence, but the fact that there is that possibility was tempting (to say the least); keeping in mind the OEM power levels

I had considered that there may have been issues with the specs of the motor build or the tune, or the way the motor as driven (by me), broken-in, or how the oil system was plumbed; BUT for a long time I have been very cautious how this KA24de-t motor and transmission was treated; mainly because I wanted to avoid a 4th or 5th rebuild.

After doing some internet price estimations, we found that being this was for a performance application, we would be buying OEM parts (as part of the OEM engine), to then just replace with performance parts; and if the used motor did need a rebuild - we'd be paying for an engine build anyways. It seemed almost less expensive to build the engine.

I contacted Golen Engine service:
https://golenengineservice.com/

I contaced Holley :

SERIOUSLY nerve-racking experience taking a cutting wheel to a perfectly fine transmission, lol :D

CD00A (basically CD009, but new year so new number ID). After marking the bell housing with a paint marker (using the one casting rib as reference and a tape measure), we used an angle grider w/ cutting disc and then a 60 and 80 grit flap disc to smooth; also cut off one of the "ears" on the side of the trans (for attaching 350z/370z things) that wont be needed for this application (smoothed this cut surface out as well - will help give clearance when fitting the trans in the tunnel:
Image

Trimmed the end of this bolt flush w/ flap disc on angle grinder to ensure clearance with the adapter plate (**had everything taped up and wrapped to ensure no metal debris got into exposed areas- since the adapater plate is replacing the input shaft seal cover:
Image

New aluminum bell housing onto the Collin's adapter plate first:
Image

Image

Adapter plate and new bell housing attached to the modified transmission:
Image

Tried hard to prevent a gap between the adapter plate and the original trans, but after having some difficulty of getting it to sit flush, decided to just trim a little extra off. This gap may help with cooling a bit...at least that's my excuse

Project has slowed down a lot- had to figure out some of the supporting components for the engine (as mentioned). Still planning on doing an update video as requested, but will most likely be sometime near the end of next month (July). Engine and trans ARE in though!

Today , installed "Serial Nine's" shifter relocation. It seems to place the shifter almost exactly where the OEM shifter sits! Actually had to to disassemble the whole shifter assembly, install the base and reassemble the shifter pieces on top of it. I will try to remember to include the headaches we came across with the motor and trans, but for now I'll just say it was easier to disassemble an unfamiliar part with multiple tight tolerance pieces, risking the chance of it not going back together the same, than it was to try to move the motor and trans, lol.

Instagram has been much faster for updates w/o the need for a third party pic host, so most of the updates have been on there. I'm thinking maybe video logs on youtube with hyperlinks may be a reasonable alternative to posting pics on here?

The new motor and trans are in...temporarily. The plan is to get as much "mocked-up" and mounted as possible with the motor and trans in (to ensure clearances and fitment), then remove for painting or any other possible fab work.

Serial Nine's new CD999 shifter relocation for z33 trans (comes with mounting positions for both early and late model transmissions). This one is used with the CD00A (which is basically the CD009, but different year so different code. Just did some minor trimming of the trans tunnel, making sure to leave as much intact as possible; especially the four threaded holes around the outside of the shifter.

Updates on this project have been slow to say the least, currently just doing a lot of dreaming....I mean....research, build plans and planning build stuff :eusa-shifty: hah

There is suddenly a lot more to do when ALL the electronics, fuel and vacuum lines are removed. More to come. If you haven't already feel free to add me on IG (tags in signature). I post vids and pics on my story on weekends before it's posted on here.

Well... hello everyone, been too long!! Hope everyone is doing well.

Maybe we just pick up where we left off on this thread? Yeah?

So most of the wiring has been stripped out. Picked up a "Power Distribution Module" (PDM) and keypad- hope to share more on this later, but basically replaces a bunch of fuses with solid state programable "fuses". May need to incorporate some solid state relays too, but we'll have to see if we get that far.

Don't quite know what's going on for the new fuel setup yet, but OEM tank is coming out and will provide a convenient time window to also do an inspection and cleaning from the few laps put in at the tracck with this setup (*just to clarify, no drive time with the new engine setup yet)

So found some "mystery" fluid on the outside of the driverside brake line. Just tiny drops, but still wet though.
One or two on the outside of the brake line crimp casing and one or two tiny drops on the Rear Lower Control Arm (RLCA).

.
Then saw the strange angle the line was at, with the contact point on the RLCA being at the crimp section of the brake line....probably not a good thing :dunno:

This is all with the caliper installed too. The caliper and knuckle do move up with the RCLA, but the angle changes and the line looking like this at full droop is not good, so will have to address this with maybe different style lines (banjo fittings for caliper side) or new lines.

 .Just a side note too NEVER loosen the rear suspension bottom mount (bolt that holds the colored strut body to the knuckle without first unloading the suspension by lifting the rear of the car so that the suspension is in full droop (wheels off the ground)!! Impact wrench loosened it a little faster than I thought it would and it just slid off dropping the rear of the car on that side- guessing either the tire touching the inner fender well or suspension binding was what stopped it from fully going down to the ground...but yea, never loosen anything on spring/weight loaded parts like suspension. Always unload all that potential energy first.

Ok so back to lowing the subframe so we can get the OEM gad tank out...

I didn't trust the pinch weld on the one side so opted to place the jack stands on the frame in the rear in front of the front subframe mounting points- looked like it was going to work too until got to the "point of no return"- subframe off balance on the jack that is supporting the whole structure on the diff and the rear mounting points already off the rear studs. The subframe needs to drop down level so it won't bind on the mounting studs.

The front wouldn't come off without contacting the jack stands, so had to re install the rear, only the rear couldn't be reinstalled because it was binding and the jack was in the wrong location on the diff to relevel it all

...so, with a second jack used the frame that extends out past the rear subframe mounting points to jack up the passenger side and reposition that jackstand under the jackpot section of pinch weld. Then removed the gas tank "canister" (rectangular box on passenger side in rear ) to access the rear section of frame on that side and jacked it up- temporarily removing the jackstand that was contacting the subframe on the passenger side (obviously need to check to ensure jack points are all structurally sound first- which is why I didn't just use the passenger side jackpoint on the pinch weld; and all centered and double checked over to ensure everything was in a place where it wouldn't slip- also had put the wheels face up- one on each side under the pinchwelds/frame on either side as an extra precaution.

With this setup, we were able to free the front of the subframe from the front mounting studs and lower the subframe down all the way and out; going through the opposite process of using the jack and repositioning the jackstands to where they were.

And it's out!

Taped over the brake shoes and plastic bags were just to protect the finish on the arms from the could've when lowering the rear subframe.

Next up is the gas tank. Then have a few other things to do before this goes back in- mainly deciding whether or not to just install this temporarily for removal again in another few months or just do everything now while it's out :dunno:
