While most people consider a shift knob just an accessory, any real driver knows that parts of the car that provide a medium for the driver to interact with the vehicle are the most important.
After doing a little research I found the Nismo GT black rubber shift knob. Found a sweet deal of $45 online and it was a direct threaded knob for Nissan shifters. I used this knob for about 4 years and absolutely loved it. The rubber never got hot or cold; it gripped well, and never loosened up on me. Just last week, however, it became loose, and I figured that over time of course it must have turned a bit. It became apparent to me that it wasn’t the whole knob that was loose; it was the rubber “skin”. Turns out that the construction of the knob consists of a metal threaded base with a molded outer rubber piece glued over it. Over time the adhesive must have deteriorated or dried out. As it does not really affect the performance of the knob, it does bother me. I love the knob but I’m just one of those people who even though no one else knows or notices something, if I know its there, it just bothers me.
So I set out again to find something maybe a little different and hopefully something that is ONE piece. I just want to point out that I have nothing bad to say about the Nismo GT rubber knob, but because of the situation, I felt it was time to try something else.
Surfing the web I stumbled upon a website www.Monsterknobs.com, and was interested by their product. It was just what I was looking for. A solid one piece ball shaped shift knob that comes threaded to fit your specific car. And by using a resin material, it will not become hot or cold like a metal knob will. To top it off, it was only $40 and shipping was FREE! I thought it was too good to be true at first, so I read everything on the website and let it sit in the back of my head for a week. Looking at similar alternatives online, the only other options were name brand (GReddy, HKS, ARC) knobs that cost between $60 and $100 for the same thing with a name stamped on it. Personally I like the clean look w/o any names or shift patterns on the knob.
The service from this company could not be any better. Just a few hours after ordering from their website, I received a confirmation email letting me know it would be shipped out the next day (I put in the order on a Sunday!) In the email the employee stated that their shipping is via USPS and that I would take only 2-5 days to receive my shift knob, but usually it’s closer to 2 business days.
So if you’re in the market for a new shift knob or just sick of your current one. It is definitely worth giving MonsterKnobs a try! It is cheaper than the major name brands out there and most likely better quality too. I currently do not have any pictures of it installed, but if anyone feels they would like to see some, just give me a shout and I can run out in the garage and snap a few. _________________ 93 240sx SE fastback
