KA24ET Project!

Post by Drift Racer » Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:45 pm

Hi, i have a 89 240SX with a KA24E with about 69.000 miles and the engine has been running great with no major problems! This car is mainly for drifting, but i also drive it around sometimes!
Some time ago i decided to turbo this engine, so i started searching here for everything i could find about ka24et projects and now i´m going to list the setup i´m trying, feel free to comment!

The List:

Stock engine (no rebuild)
CXRacing Turbo Kit
HKS SSQV BOV
Tial 38mm Wastegate or similar
Turbo gauge
Oil Temp and Pressure Gauge (Already installed)
Wideband AEM AFR Gauge (Already Installed)
Z32 (N62) MAF
460cc Injectors
NGK BKR7E (0,44) or BKR6E11 (0,35)
305 LPH Fuel Pump (already installed)
Tuned ECU

I think i´m not forgeting anything. My goal is 250/280whp, and want keep it reliable, i know a cxracing kit might not be the best choice but i´m trying it anyway! Some of the parts (BOV, WG) will be replaced! The first thing i´m doing is a compression test to see if the internals are all ok, if they are, then i´ll start the project!

If you guys know any good deals on wastegate, Maf, Injectors and ecu let me know, the rest i already have!

About the ecu, can you point me in the right direction, what should i go with, tuned chip, reprogramed ecu, JWT, Nistune? I don´t understand that much about ecu programing!

Here´s a picture of the engine bay as it is now...

Image

By the way, i´m sorry for my poor english

Let me know what you guys think about the setup, will it work ok, do i need anything else to run it properly?

Thanks :)

sounds like a good build. I'd brace that cx manifold. If you dont want to mess with or learn about ecu tuning go with a jwt tuned ecu. Other wise send out your ecu to some place to get nistune installed and tune away.

nelson240sx, i am considering using their tuned ECU (jwt), besides beeing a bit expensive, it seems to be the "safest" way to go to keep it reliable and get the most out of the engine!

Sorry i don´t completely understand the question, but if your asking how much PSI i want the wg to make, the answer is 7PSI!

i recommend a new manifold, I have had zero problems with the cx racing wastegate or bov, and I have been running it for about a year now. The manifold however, i have had off and rewelded 4 times. It's definately a good kit, and with a set of rx7 injectors makes some pretty potent power for the money

Hi, what is the worst scenario it can happen with the manifold? i have read around and they normally crack and like you said it has to be rewelded, with it cracked i will have a exhaust leak, but i can still drive it home from a drift day or can it damage the engine or turbo in the process?

If i´m not mistaken the KA24E uses top feed high impedance injectors, or low impedance with resistors (to convert them to high impedance)!

what do you think about these injectors for my engine, they say they are direct drop in, uses the stock plug, it´s basically plug and play...

worst case scenario that I have had with the manifold is that the wastegate flange breaks off and you have zero boost and a loud car thats gonnna leave crap all in your engine bay and a possibility you could lose your wastegate.

As far as the injectors go, I have heard mixed reviews about the venom injectors, some say they're great, some say they're junk. The rx7 injectors are 500cc I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but they are drop in injectors as well. The only thing I had to do with mine is cut some of the plastic off of where the wiring plug goes. But in my case it actually helped because the plugs from the wiring harness fit the injectors really securely and I did not have to worry about them coming off

And they can be had for even cheaper than that.

I got a set for 50 bucks off of a local guy who has had tonnes of RX7s, he just had them sitting around.

Siemens Deka injectors as sold by Deatchwerks are pretty awesome, I ran 750CCs.

you shouldnt need anything more than 370's, i ran my car on stockers @ 7psi, but it was scary lean...

I run a CX header and it crackrt likr the first event on the wastgate flange. I had the header repaired and pressure tested then I wrapped 50ft of 1'' heat tape. I wish I would have changed the angle 90 to keep the WG away from the wheelwell. onothr problem with the CX top mount header is how close the turbo is to the plugs but its either that or the brakes. sorry for the huge pics on your other page, I didnt know they were that big. And good job on the engine bay it looks like a new car.

I´v been searching around and decided not to go with Venom injectors, i´ve read some bad reviews about them!

I´m looking to get some good injectors, not too expensive, and kind of direct drop in type.
I don´t want to do a lot of modifications on the fuel rail and injectors, at worst, just changing the plugs and be set to go!

If you know any good deals on a set (4) of 550cc injectors let me know, i´v been looking at SARD, Denso, DSM, but they are a litlle hight for my wallet, right now!

I´ve just bought a oem 300ZX Z32(N62) MAF, it´s on the mail to me!

I´ll keep updating as i go :)

Rx7 injectors are going to be your best bet. Direct drop in and can be had reasonably cheap, check around on here and the rx7 forums

Yah, i´m thinking on going with RX7 Injectors! The ones that are a direct fit to my ka24e are the 88 or 89-91 that are high impedance.

Tell me something, can i use 460cc reliably with this setup??

definately, with your power goals I dont see why 460cc wouldn't be enough

I just thought you would only want topfeeds so the 460cc would be fine I know people using 440cc on 10psim Make sure the impedance is high and the feed is top. when I bought my injectors I didnt think about impedance and had to wire in a resistor. Also I had to buy mitsubishi tabs, but it was worth the wiring and time besides I needed new tabs anyway. I like your cold air intake. I ran a pacesetter header on my single before I knew you could turbo them. Since then I have found many ways to gain power safely and fairly cheap. I didnt realize you had a fanshroud Keep that thing it makes it run so much cooler.

Thanks :D I´m looking at a few deals on top feed high impedance RX7 460cc or 550cc injectors!

Do you know what i need to do to make these (RX7 Injectors) work properly on the kae fuel rail?
My plans are, rewire the new plugs, drop in the injectors, tight the fuel rail, plug the injectors and i´m ready to go! Am i missing something?

I read somewhere that i should replace the o-ring on the new injectors tip with the one from the oem injector to better fit?

Another thing, do you know if i can use my stock kae plugs (square), on the rx7 injectors that use square conectors?

Thanks :)

the factor ka-e connectors will work, but you will have to trim some of the plastic off of the injectors. This works surprisingly well, the clips are not loose and fit very snuggly on the injectors. The injectors are drop in, but I think its best if you install new o-ring kits on the injectors whenever you get them, you can pick up a set from the local parts store for a 240sx and they will work fine

Ok, i´ve ordered rx7 460cc injectors ( oval plug), they came with new o-rings and grmmets and plugs as well!

Yesterday a recieved the Z32 MAF with plug, so i´m going to search here and on Nico forums for the wiring!

This weekend i am doing te compression test on the engine and post the numbers here.

I´ve took some afr and oil pressure numbers, give your opinions about them!

AFR

Cold Start (Idle): 11.5/12.0

Wot: 14.0/15.0

Oil pressure

Cold Start (Idle): 70psi

Idle (Hot): 20psi

Yeah exactly, 15:1 WOT will blow your motor very quickly.

I usually start out at 10.5/11:1 and start going from there. If I see as much as a 13 on my wideband during a pull I let off immediately.

I looked at my aftermarket fuel pressure regulator and it was at about 28psi, so i adjusted it to 34 (stock)! After 1 hour i started it up and it showed 12.5, and at WOT 11.0/11.5.

I´ve just did the compression test and the numbers are 140/142 on 3 cylinders and 135/138 on the other one! What do you think?

I want to thank you for all your support/opinions on my project :D

Hi, i know i´m beeing annoying but today i decided to do another test based on the nico guide, http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread/159838
The test i made yesterday was based on my manual instructions, and the diference between them is step 3 Release fuel pressure, my manual doesn´t have this step!

So with the new test the numbers are these, cylinder 1 and 3: 140, cylinder 2 and 4: 145!

I also checked my afr at cold start (idle) and it´s 12.5, that´s probably too high right? Should i lower the fuel pressure, considering that i have a Injen air intake system, more air into the engine, same amount of fuel? I don´t know if i´m thinking this right!

as long as it leans out once its warmed up i wouldn't worry about leaning it out. Ecu probably runs rich to help warm up the engine faster when cold.
