Head Build (a whole lot of random info and parts) IN ONE!!!

Post by tom550 »

VALVE SPRINGS:
Pioneer Inc Automotive Products, can be bought from Summit Racing
Intake Part Number: RV-1034-4 *set of 4, so buy qty 2*
Exhaust Part Number: RV-611-4 *set of 4*

And you can just use your stock inner springs with these, or order new Nissan ones.

I noticed that the Pioneer springs mentioned were on backorder from summit which was acceptable to me. I made some phone calls to Federal mogul and found their application list off their website.
http://www.21cgt.com/FMWebCatalog/frmSpecification.aspx
I found the appropriate part number that looks like a good candidate which sure enough cross references the same to the pioneer spring listed. The springs are off a 1968 ford bronco 4.7l 289ci engine (also found in lots of other 60s fords).

You can now look that up anywhere and get whatever valve springs your heart desires. I opted for some federal mogul sealed power VS672 springs off rockauto for only a buck and a half each. Hope this helps someone else not looking to wait.
used stock inner and outer intake and exhaust valve springs and compared them to the Pioneer Outer Springs with brand new stock inner springs
------------Intake---------Exhaust
Stock:------132 lbs---------100lbs
Upgrade:---160 lbs---------128lbs

SOHC 240SX wrote:I got the specs back from the shop using the Pioneer outer springs with Stock OEM inner springs

Intall Height ( No Shims)

1.930 Intake
1.820 Exhaust

Install height will change and vary depending how much material is machined from the valve seats. But this was my measurements with a 5 angle valve job.

Open and Closed Pressure with factory shims (0.040)

Intake:
105 lbs @ 1.890 Closed
250 lbs @ 1.440 Open

Exhaust:
105 lbs @ 1.780 Closed
260 lbs @ 1.335 Open

My engine builder said after a few heat cycles and breaking in the motor, most springs lose pressure right off the back. So we upgrades the factory shims to 0.060 shims to get back any pressure we may lose once the motor is broken in. The shim change should add about 10 lbs.

Heres the RV-611-4 can also be had for $1.12 each before shipping :D

and the intake springs RV-1034-4

https://www.horsepowerparts.com/index.p ... _id=247517

$21.84 before shipping

I guess my 11 second stock block sohc is gonna be cheaper than i thought!

Edit: $28.39 after shipping :D

SI valves makes swirl polished undercut valves for the single.
I just ordered 4 of them today. FYI they list as .5mm OS but that's a print mistake, they are direct drop in without seat modification. They were only 11 bux ea when I ordered.

ARP HEAD STUDS:
KA24ETZTM wrote:Ok so I searched SOHC ARP in the search bar and this is a question that is brought up at least 3 times a month, lol. So lets clear up all confusion and vote to sticky this so future SOHC guys can get there answer quick. First off there is no ARP part number in the catalog for a single cam ka. Its an assortment of other studs, nuts and washers. Companies basicly measure call arp and get what they need. Usually sites will have the part number listed like (arp pt # custom)
The part numbers are below for the head studs

ARP KA24E headstud "kit" per Grimsta

Stud: 10 x AM5.100-1LB
Nut: 10 x 300-8344 $4.30
Washer: 10 x 200-8519

****The main studs are exactly the same as any kit for the DOHC****

You can get both main studs and head studs from the guys below

Our most popular grinds for the 12V SOHC Nissan's is known as the "TRI FLOW".
The principal behind the design is to open the intake valves progressively.
We find opening both valves at the same time causes more bottom end loss than necessary.
By opening one valve first allows the fuel to travel across the chamber at a greater velocity and then helps pull in the second charge.
These profiles also help cut down on overlap and work great in Turbo's and N.O.S.
applications.

The R5 race cam requires the use of race pistons and alternate valve train components. (listed on this page). When installing any new camshaft, new OE rocker arms must be used. OE rocker arm ratio is 1.422:1. Basic cam specs are indicated in ( ).
