Dead Walbro and E85

Post by supakat »

Just wondering who out there has had issues with e85 and dead walbro's. This is the second pump to die with corn. I had a lucas pump in their that worked with 93 for 1.5 years. After two months of corn, it died. I bought a Walbro and yes authentic, and it just died today. It has been running for 3 months without a hiccup. I am going to pickup a DW301 next since they support e85 and have a 3 year warranty.

I heard somewhere that Walbro doesn't recommend using their 255 pump with ethanol.

I have been reading and it seems to be a hit or miss with these. On an LS1 tech website, a user reported that he used 92 with walbro for 2 years and when switched to corn, died in 3 weeks while others have been running for over a year with corn.

I wonder if it has to do with the blends because down here we get e85 more often than up north when it is cold. Maybe with the lower mixture's, the pump is lubricated with petrol.

It is a mystery I suppose but at least with DW, I will have 3 year warranty. Also, hopefully corn is not to blame. Maybe the connector came undone because of the massive 250whp I am putting down to the ground!

This is what I don't get. The bell curve is very broad. I understand if 1-2 years max but 6 years. That is great. Wish I could have that. It really gets my P-O'd because I hate being down.

One of our site vendors, Real Street Performance, did a really good fuel pump comparison article a short while back between some very popular fuel pumps. Look it up on their site if you haven't come across it yet. I found it to be VERY interesting.

Excellent info ^

The site wouldn't load, so I just pulled up the google cached version. Poor Walbro results...

Sorry you got the BS train hitting you right now supa. Best of luck with the new pump!

Its no big deal. I got a response from Walbro.
Luis,
I am sorry that you are having problems. Unfortunately, our ‘255lph’ GSS340/341/342 pumps are not endorsed for use in E85. We will be releasing a true E85 compliant pump into the aftermarket by the end of this year.
I once again apologize for your problems, and wish I could suggest a good E85 pump for you, but there simply aren’t any on the market right now.

I would imagine they flow better than 255 lph also being that they're coming standard in a V8 SUV.

Gotta check and see for v8 pumps. But 300lph DW in-tank for $160 is not bad.

Well, this isn't good news at all. I'm running a Walbro and was planning to switch to E85 once I get my motor broke in. Guess I'll be getting a new pump. I like what I read about the Aeromotive 340. I'll probably go with that and the Nismo adjustable FPR.
Wiseco/Eagle, JWT S1 cams, BC valve springs, PT5857, ID1700 injectors, SR20DET ECU w/ Nismotronic, COP conversion with LS ignition coils, etc, etc...

It might last in KY since you get lower doses of ethanol than down here in fl.

I've had 2 walboros die over 5 years of running E85.

yes it does kill the life of the pump i've seen other locals run into same issue.

I dont daily my s14 but first pump lasted a few years and second pump lasted 6 months but did more driving

240$ for 2011 chevy surburban 5.3L flex fuel fuel pump

sure they can be had for less, but most of the e85 supported pumps seem to float around 200$ for new. seen a couple used on ebay for 60-100$

while that is tempting DW still wins because of the 3 year warranty and it has the same dimensions as the walbro. The v8 pumps may be bigger.

I managed to unstick the pump. Just give it 12v current. I have the battery relocated to the back so it is easy to get a good power source. Now, I am wondering about running some marvels mystery oil to lube the pump and injectors probably once a month or so. I am just wondering what it will do to my octane.

And yes, some people run oil through their pumps when running e85. I think I ran once every 2-3 months just to make sure.

Yes. Never tried that but I have been using marvel's for years with great results. Plus I love the minty smell it has. :D

idk if you read all the way through the results... but based on that article, the walbro is the cheapest pump that is suitable for the majority of modified car owners. Most people on this site won't come close to touching where the walbro really becomes incapable to supply the fuel needed based on the theoretical equations they're using to come up with fuel pressure/flow/hp. Except of course, in the case of e85.
