Save up 5 grand, And you'll be happy with the amount of power your 240sx can make, IF you have all the parts and know what your doing, Ive seen a an engine removed, Torn down, put back together, and installed back in the bay in about 1 week and taking his time.. So maybe 1-2 weeks of down time on the car, And maybe another week of tuning Maybe longer to get it dead on 100% where you want it.
As far as the research needed to do all these things, It could take a few months before you buy ur first turbo part..Find a power goal, Find a turbo for your power goals, Read on tuning, And read Dyno Post. The parts list is easy
Good luck

wow this thread makes me feel great!!
1.5 years, 1 healthy ass motor, 5 grand later ( now broke ) and still no boost for me lol
0 accidents knock on wood.
I have an Excel file with every penny spent on the car thus far from cost of tools to registration...basically anything that was needed for the car is in there....and i think ive done a good job in terms of what i have and what I've spent. my only regret is paying $400 to have a tranny with BM shifter shipped in from Florida, waaayy too much paid.
I got the s14 with little front damage in auto form for $1150 and i put $5000 into her to have her where she is now, and she still needs:
1. Fresh Paint
2. Windshield Washer pump
3. Driver side door switch died.
4. AC needs gas
5. Dome light bulb needs to be replaced
6. Speed sensor needs to be wired to dash
7. Horn needs to be wired
8. BOOST
those minor things aside everything is 100% functional and pristine.

you know you are doing it right when you put $1500-$2000 into unknown little items like gaskets, studs, bore gauges, micrometers, blue shop towels, ...and then are still 2 years into your build.
I'd bet i'm over $5000 now, and I still don't have a turbo, AEM, fuel system, exhaust manifold, bov or wastegate.
But The way I figured. If I built it like the 800hp dudes, I should be able to run a safe 500hp. Pending I degree the cams right.

At the end of the day theres absolutely no shame it doing slow and doing it right. Sure i could have had 300whp by now with what i spent, but id have no means of stopping , and no sort of handling.
i chose brakes and suspension to tackle first and now im heading for reliable turbo power even if it takes me 2 more years to get there.

its like going to a casino, if you start counting chips you better walk away cause you dont have the follow through to win.
I have a stack of receipts for my 510 that is just weeks away from boosting. I "estimate" 7k in engine parts suspension etc for the car. and I haven't even paid for my pistons, rods, misc hoses and clamps yet. not to mention lsd. granted my KA-T is in a 510. you could throw 2k at ebay and boost if you're just in a rush.

Im under 12k w/ built motor, recaro's, cage, fuel cell, volks's, couple color changes, sheetmetal intake bla bla bla. I could run 8's with 18 grand, not cutting corners

I can't even afford board games. I don't understand how anyone can boost their car before the age of 20. Like big boost... not a T2 set-up, I could have bought a used set-up by now.TinyT wrote:id cut your losses and buy some board gamesStay KA wrote:check my date joined and i'm still not boosted. and i've spent a ton of money.
4 years, 1 car, 2 engines, 6 accidents, and 0 boost
I'm a full time student. I make 7.25 an hour right now. If I'm lucky I get 15 hours a week at work. After gas and insurance I come out with like $70 a paycheck to do whatever with. But that means I'd have to stay home everyday and not spend a cent. And by the time some real money comes my way the tires need to be replaced. Or something on the car goes wrong. Murphy's Law...
And where I'm at it is terrible. I'm lucky I even have a job. I can't wait to go back to Germany and make some real money again.

lol yea thats a good rule of thumb, you must be this old to boost **points to 20 years mark** I'm 21 I have a good high paying job but I have a girlfriend and rent. So I might aswell be making minimum wage. I suck at saving money as well. That stroker kit was good motivation though. I would have never been able to save up that kind of money without it.
But part of the fun in being young is working on your crappy car! Cheers!

Actually he already did ask.
And, really, living at home is being sponsored by mom. I know all about it.

little over 6k in my car car included... it could very well be over 7k due to the little misc **** everyone knows you end up buying, who has ever boosted a car. I am also poor, my parents haha, last thing they bought for me was my birthday dinner. But apartment FTW, i do use their garage to work on my cars, partly because all my good tools are at work and all my other tools are at their house. I can see how someone could spend 18k on a car, by not being thrifty. I buy alot of stuff new on clearance, rebuilt or used. I never pay full price Unless it is absolutly necesicary.
