Drive shaft loop?

Post by Badazzsr20 »

Hey guys,

Need to Pick your brains again... I got s14
and I need a drive shaft loop. I don't no if that's what it's called but that's the name it was for my mustang. Pretty much what it does is if the drive shaft happens to break while racing it stops the drive shaft from falling and grabbing the street and flipping the car over.

I need to know where to buy this and how to mount it. I'm hoping that there's a place that sells one for are car that's a bolt on. If anyone can help with this please let me know.

Thanks guys

You can buy one at a swap meet or from summit. They come universal with different wholes to mount where you want it. I put one on my s13 took about 30min that's including lifting the car and putting the stands. It's really simple.

I'm pretty sure all years of the s14 came stock with these. If your under the car looking towards the front of the car, towards the back of the DS, there should be 4 studs, 2 on each side of the DS coming out of a flat surface. The studs run parallel to the ground and point towards the back of the car. Maybe the studs were broken off from a previous owner?

That "safety cradle" piece for the DS is literally just 2 pieces of stamped steel connected with a "Z" shaped piece of 1/3-1/2" round bar stock.

i don't have mine anymore i don't think i have a 1 peace drive shaft and i think ii removed this peace ur talking about. even if there was the stock one in its unless. also if there is one stock and its in the back of the drive shaft so the "diff" side then this is pointless u need it by the slip yoke in so if it breaks up front it wont dig into the ground and flipping the car. i don't think i have this i remember seeing it in my house so i don't have it anymore.

The stock drive shaft has a center bearing which is right after the first tube of the stock 2-piece drive shaft and it is held in place with a collar that is bolted to the underbody of the car. The "safety cradle" then goes after that. So if the bolts holding the driveshaft to the DIFF fall out, it rests on the safety cradle like you mentioned. With the stock setup the DS is not able to slip out of the back of the trans (due to the bearing collar) and if the bolts fall off the DS holding it to the DIFF the safety cradle will catch it. **I'm just guessing that the probability of the very ends of the DS coming off would be a higher probability than all of the bolts holding the two halves together, and actually all of the bolts on the DS are "torque-to-yield" one time use bolts, so they should stay in there**

If you have a One-piece aftermarket DS, you're right, the OEM safety cradle will probably not work due to the larger diameter of the aftermarket DS. I guess one could taq-weld everything too.

Drill the floor nhra rules not your friends rules. Put a carpet over it, who cares if they feel a bolt your not feeling it. It's a race car not a q45 smh

I was just thinking, you could probably use the bolts and the threaded bolt holes from where the "carrier bearing" bracket mounts up to the under-body of the car to mount a driveshaft loop too.
