Mild Turbo build for Cage car (6th KA-T build, lol)

Post by nelson240sx »

Originally built the car in 2013 and it had a black top SR. Ran like that for 2 or 3 years, then got bored and after building a drift specific car I decided to switch it up to a turbo VH45DE. Had that setup from 2016 through 2021 and now I’m going back to my roots and threw a KA in it. I wanted it to lose some weight and since I sold my high compression turbo ka s13, I will be drifting the cage car again. A responsive 250whp is so much fun in this thing.

It’s a basic build
S14 ka
King bearings
Arp rod bolts, only used them because another local ka guy was selling them for 20$
Cloyes timing tensioners/guides (reused factory chains)
Arp 12mm studs (ford pinto 2000cc kit, you will need to order proper sized washers as the kits washers are way small)
Stock piston with slightly larger ring gaps
Micro squirt
Sti 510cc side feeds
Bosch 040
Custom Intercooler and turbo manifold
EFR 7163
TDR oil housing adapter
Stock 350z pressure plate with 6 puck act disc
RB20det flywheel

Think that’s about it…

Love it!! Got any videos of this thing? That bay is clean and I dig that color on the valve cover.

Curious about why you chose 12mm studs on stock pistons. Later plans?!

No big plans with this engine, but I don’t like messing with blown head gaskets, lol. I had problems previously and just jump straight to the 12mm studs to make sure. I’m able to do the necessary machining at home (not perfect, but good enough). The 12mm studs cost about the same as buying the 10mm arp studs.

No videos of it with the ka, just took it for its first drive this past week. Will try to get some video/pics around the end of april when I go to a drift event… as long as there’s no chance of rain, lol.

It’s not that good, no close up pics 😉

Thanks though

Looking back at my abilities from almost 10 years ago makes me want to build another one. Could make it much lighter.

Few pictures from the drift event a couple months ago. In my quest for maximum response I placed the WG in a spot that wasn’t optimal and ended up having a bit of boost creep. Knew it was a possibility when I made the manifold so I’m no mad. Going to add a second WG at some point so I can get control of the boost pressure and then I plan to put it on a dyno and play around with timing to make sure I’m getting the most of of it. For now she creeps up to 14psi (8psi spring), but it only gets up there in the higher rpm’s…. Power band Kinda feels like a super charger since it builds power with rpm, lol. Plugs don’t show any signs of detonation, timing is at 13.5*

Looks like a blast to drive on track. Which tracks do you go to?

There are a few around the Indianapolis area. I’ve taken it to riverside drift in Salem, IN…. SMP drift which is also in Salem… then there is the speedrome in Indianapolis and they even ran a few events at the local fairgrounds. Hoping I’ll be able To take it up to US Air in Wisconsin in the next couple years.

I have random clips from some of the events, will have to put together a video at some point.

Can see some short clips on my Instagram nelson_8708
